Martley
I run a Decorators Merchant - part of an Independent Chain, selling most brands of paint to the Trade and general public. Been there 20 years, and been in the Paint Industry most of my life other than a couple of years when after Redundancy I went selling Insurance for "The Pru" Edited March 27, 2020 by Martley

My online application was submitted on Sunday morning just after 6 am. The money arrived on my account just over an hour ago. That's roughly 80 hrs between applying and receiving the money. We really do have a superb social system here.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend being a pilot as a job that's suitable for playing in bands on the side, due to the scheduling and lifestyle issues. That's not to say I haven't had fun trying, it just takes a lot of organising and understanding/flexible bandmates. You didn’t used to ( or possibly still do ) own a Porsche 928 by any chance? You've probably looked into this already, but just in case......can't you get your last employer to take you back on and furlough you on 80% of what you were being paid? Doesn't cost them anything as they get it from the Govt anyway.........fingers crossed for you on the UC and jobsearch - hope the latter option works for you though!😉👍
Merton
Well my job has become a lot more fun. We are dealing with a number of the UK consortiums building ventilators and have been ramping up all our production lines of the pressure gauges used so we can supply the thousands needed. Many conference calls later we're already committed to 13,000 pieces in the next few weeks. INteresting being on the other side of the news stories I have to say...

danbanbass
Most of my career I have spent working in the Highways Industry, originally starting as a Labourer and working my way into a Highways Inspectors role which took me to New Zealand in 2016 and return back to blighty in 2019. Due to the lack of vacancies in the area I live in, I ended up working on the Railway as a crossing keeper. I manually open and close gates at a Level crossing as I struggled to get through signalling school and pass out as a signaller (Signalman) - I had previously for a short stint worked as a Service engineer for Southern Railway but have found that the more time I spend in the rail industry, the more I want to return back to the highways due to all the politics and shift work which makes it difficult to find a decent work/life balance plus the salary is no different and I get to work Mon-Fri in the day.

Re-trained as a garden designer, ran a small plant nursery and also started to study a particular branch of horticulture that was untested. Retired now but write and give talks on my specialist subject. ME is a b*tch. I was off work from 93 to 95 with it and then took another year working back up to full time. Always good to hear of someone else who crawled back up out of the ME pit... Edited April 3, 2020 by TrevorR

I'm a diabetic and my consultant at the time was all over it - he'd had a couple of friends/colleagues from medical school who'd gone from being up and coming, top flight surgeon-types to pretty much bed rest, so he really took it seriously. In fact, he took me as a bit of a case study/guinea pig to see what treatments might help. Not many are that lucky.

One died, one is still badly afflicted and it pretty much dominates her life. I was the lucky one. I can't get those years back but, on the plus side, I have a very different outlook on life now. NancyJohnson
I fell into Credit Management at an early age (supply of medical products and then retail jewellery supply) and also did a six year stint in project finance (telecoms sector) that ended about 18 months ago. It's certainly not something I wanted to do by any stretch...had I been a little more astute in the early 80s and had more supportive parents (who were more concerned about me paying my keep that finding a career I was genuinely interested in), I lived a cycle-ride from Shepperton Studios and a bus ride from Pinewood Studios, so would loved to have gotten into there and just found my way once in. If I had my time again, I would have loved to have studied Astronomy and found a career through that.
