Great thread 😊

Group therapy. Mostly with angry or violent men.
Love my job. Stopped full time music to do it as I found it more fulfilling. I’m happier musically as a result.

I got there via banking, retail, scaffolder, bottle washing (literally), builders merchant, addiction counselling, prison, probation, teaching and musician.

My CV is not “linear”. 🤪

In the current situation it looks sadly, that you will be busier than usual.

That’s cool, I’m quite interested in the London Underground,  the central line is my favourite line .

The central line is the only line where the passengers do more miles than the trains!! 😁

Is that the same as, or different from, architectural conservation?

Sorry for the numpty question, but the term is new to me.

Same thing Architect dealing in the above. Far more interesting than new builds.

I was an electronics tech for 5 years with the Biomedical Physics Dept Aberdeen Uni. A wee change of career and I've been a CSi/Forensic Photographer for the past 34 years, still in the job. Music and gigging keeps me sane along with black humour and evil sarcasm lol

I'll bet you probably have the strongest stomach of anyone on Basschat.  When I did my shift with my local police station, the duty sergeant sat me down for a chat and during the chat he asked me if I had a good sense of humour.  I replied yes and he went on to explain that as police they were so used to dealing with the bottom rung of society that it made them cynical and wore them down after a while.  Developing a black sense of humour kept them sane.

It's not just dealing with those at the bottom, anyone will lie and cheat to further their own ends. We aren't so much worn down as hardened to cynicism. It's a funny old job and a right laugh but you need a strong stomach and a pair of stones to last.

Similar coping strategies to prison staff.

Your career seems to have gone round the houses a bit there but you've ended up doing a job that must be quite rewarding. Well done.

Actually wanted to be either a rockstar or footballer. But I’ve just gone with “the flow”, having a very understanding wife, and one step somehow has connected with the next step.

Never been happier going to work each day. Rockstar/footballer/therapist? I would end up seeing grown men cry one way or another 😊

I do actually know someone who does this for a living. Yes, really. Not to dogs or children though.

Gone from processing life insurance policies to selling gas fires to answering directory enquiries and will shortly celebrate 24 years as a patent and trade mark administrator. January 2021 will be...interesting...

Yes me too, had her own dungeon in London once upon a time. Apparently the legal profession scored highly in the client list by occupation

I'm a sound engineer/backline tech/tour manager and general live production dogsbody.

Occasionally get lucky enough to work with some great artists that would probably pass for household names (and for Basschat bonus points, I once spent three days on the road teching for Victor Wooten), but I'm more often found looking after smaller club tours, corporate events, basically anything where someone needs something making louder.

Did make at least part of my living playing bass for a good while but haven't played a show in just over a year and don't expect to any time soon. I did enough of it for long enough to prove that an utterly mediocre level of playing ability is no barrier to a professional career though 😂

Well, in light of our current global predicament, my entire industry has collapsed and I'm having to mothball my company's assets until all this blows over and find some other work.

If anyone's interested in hiring someone who's nailed down their project management skills making arena shows work seamlessly and on schedule with half the budget and resources you're meant to have, polished up their communication skills taking a band from Liverpool to headline a 30k cap festival in Belarus for the British Embassy in Minsk, or who's learned to work under extreme pressure being in the monitor chair for a Grammy-winning queen of hip-hop, I'm here and I'm available!

Did seven years at BT before I pivoted my career back to music too, in various fields including project management, process improvement and change delivery.

Sorry if it's a bit of a thread hijack, but there's such a diverse set of experiences and professions here, and mine's just vanished out from under me, so if anyone's got any opportunities for short term or longer term work in project management, business improvement, logistics, comms, anything where I can put my skills to good use, I'd love to chat to you!

Like me, you have some very transferrable skills there.  I found employers are looking for specialists more than ever these days though.  Good luck with your hunt.  At these times its often about trust, pre-existing relationships and contacts looking after each other than actual skills.  People would rather employ someone they trust with less than ideal skills than someone they don't trust who is a perfect technical fit.

I'm a freelance with two roles.

1) I run training courses for businesses on business writing skills, editing, proofreading and such like.

2) I edit books for a couple of publishers.

As with the freelance musicians, engineers etc on Basschat, my future training work has evaporated  in the space of a fortnight. Every client has cancelled. Every. One.

Oh well, just as well the missus has a salary (for now) and can work from home.

Cheers!!! :-)

Not rolls of paper that serve a more basic function? If they were, you'd be a very popular chap right now 👍.
