There was an abundance of work, especially in East London with the regeneration of docklands and the Thames riverside developments

Yes I'm familiar with that, was involved with similar scale of projects by the LDA while Ken was mayor.  Did you develop for yourself? Or was it for other people?

Now I just play bass 😀

You're not the only member on here with that highly specific background...who knows, you might even know of each other but unfortunately I can't say anything more than that.

Would love to pick your brains offline one day.  Specifically about calculating feasibility and returns.

Historically, I’ve struggled with the concept of talking about what I used to do with people I don’t know. My head tells me it puts barriers up before we’ve even got to know each other, which has happened, but I really should be less bothered about it....

Brother in law and best mate are in the Police, best mates dad was in the police too.

You guys are great in very very hard circumstances with dwindling respect for the law

I always thought the yanks were OTT when they greet their ex-servicemean with 'thank you for your service', but I kinda get it now.

So....thank you Hiram.

I don’t think it’s so easy now Kiwi , at one time there were old houses everywhere, you don’t see it so much now, developer friends of mine don’t bother to refurbish anything, they just knock down and build new flats.

That's a huge responsibility that must have entailed some difficult decision making. Respect to you for doing what must have been an incredibly challenging job.

Yeah most of the commercial developers I worked with/opposed did the same.  Old office buildings weren't worth the cost of refurbishment and were frequently outside building code anyway.  In the City (who were one of my last clients) they treated buildings like they were disposable anyway (although curiously the City does not have any policies in place for how to demolish a 50 floor skyscraper safely).

I was thinking residential rather than commercial anyway but if you were being opportunitistic then maybe there isn't as much in it as I thought.  Most of the financially independent people I know got that way out of luck more than anything.  And the ones who did it the hard way are borderline sociopaths because of the stress, obstacles and demands on their time.

I'm a sound engineer/backline tech/tour manager and general live production dogsbody.

Occasionally get lucky enough to work with some great artists that would probably pass for household names (and for Basschat bonus points, I once spent three days on the road teching for Victor Wooten), but I'm more often found looking after smaller club tours, corporate events, basically anything where someone needs something making louder.

Did make at least part of my living playing bass for a good while but haven't played a show in just over a year and don't expect to any time soon. I did enough of it for long enough to prove that an utterly mediocre level of playing ability is no barrier to a professional career though 😂

Twenty-three years as a high school teacher (geography, English, music) and loved every minute of it. I was very involved in everything from outdoor education to drama and music productions but after one of my best years I left because I was worried about becoming one of those teachers who hated the job and the kids. Friends, colleagues, family and students were surprised and many to this day can't believe I would leave a very secure job that I loved and was good at part way through my career.

I took a farrier course and for the next twenty-seven years I worked on horses in a large area of Northern Ontario. It meant a lot of driving but I loved the work had a successful career working on horses every day and seeing some interesting places and meeting some great people. Unfortunately I had to retire from that business a year ago at age 72 when I developed some serious wrist/hand/finger problems and was advised to quit before it got worse. So now I play in two bands with stiff and sore hands and play in the occasional theatre pit band(Cabaret coming up in May) and try to stay busy and in shape while enjoying life in the country in a house I built 40 years ago when I moved here from Toronto.

I have been gigging since I was 16 and hope to continue for as long as possible.

Retired railways signalling engineer of some 38 years service.  If you have ever travelled on a Train from Derby to anywhere since 2010 you have passed a signal that I help put in the ground. I chaired special committees that debated and decided signal placements and then kinda project managed the actual construction. I've done many other similar projects since then, from Edinburgh to Reading and many places between.

Since my company, Carillion went bust in 2017, I have a nice little part time job working with push bikes, and my protected (thank the gods) pension to keep me happy.....oh and the music of course, never forget the music!

Not sure why it would put barriers up. Your past sounds pretty impressive and exciting and a huge respect from me.

Architectural Technician for one of the largest architectural practices in my area. Went straight into the industry after leaving school and got my qualifications. It's enabled me to work around the country and abroad.

Building Services Engineer (mechanical) I'm sure #MEP will recognise the title. I design heating, hot and cold water, ventilation and air conditioning systems mainly for commercial projects and industrial projects. Been doing it since 1985 and still enjoy it. Every project and design team (client, engineers, architect, structural engineer, quantity surveyor, project manager etc) is different.

Cabin fever specialist , which is a work from home position. The pay is £317.42 from universal credit . This payment may be stopped at any time if you do not stick to the set guidelines . The position is also required to go above and beyond the stated contract at any time . This includes  justification by logging into a journal many times a week . My coach changes every so often at random times , often at short / no notice . This happens when you are expecting phone interviews ,which is arranged by them . The first payment is 6 weeks after you join .You must also attend their specialist offices on demand ., If you have a medical condition , then your contract is not automatically terminated , but you have to get fit notes from your doctor to justify your condition . If you have over 30 years working experience in various large companies and you have had less than a few months and years off due to recuperation , it is not taken into account . This position is not a permanent role , but could lead to a suitable part time position if I go to the lcwra group and also attend the interviews mentioned above .

My only job is preparing the generators that some of you may have had the dubious pleasure of plugging into at events or festivals. I know bass players are generally considerate people so you will know where the power comes from at outdoor gigs. I don't usually attend events (except for breakdowns) to set up, or tours as I am depo based to carry out the initial servicing and cable prep. the worst power generator failure i saw was when power went down during a U2 gig at mk bowl. Bad because somebody found Bono a live mike to talk into during the temporary outage. The only money i made from a gig was a fiver which played for my quater share of our demo tape, in 1982.

I work in facilities, looking after a big industrial unit. Given that I have no practical skills at all it might seem strange, but my role is more to arrange repairs than carry them out. It also includes health & safety, fire, and ensuring compliance, plus I do staff training as well. Pretty varied, short hours, flexible hours, lots of annual leave and a decent pension. All if which suit me rather well.
