Under the "Made in Japan" is the serial number, you can date the bass using this by putting it into the many fender dating websites available online - just do a Google search. 👍

They're not numbers pal. Its a smudge on the varnish

I think that was a number once. Curious as to why it has been removed. That's where it should be.

i had two E serial standard japanese p basses, both had the same neck plate, not sure for how many years they used that style of fender printed plate.

Any chance you can take a close, clear, well-lit pic of the "number" just for the sake of the elimination of doubt? I've upscaled/enhanced as best I can and it certainly looks like an MIJ Fender s/n to me.

They're often pretty indistinct:

I had one of these. Mine was made in 1990 and had the serial number in gold below the 'made in Japan' as shown, but it had a plain neck plate without the lettering.

The one shown has non-original pickguard, bridge, pickup and knobs.

No, they're numbers, and they'll tell you pretty much all you need to know about the bass if you take the time to look at them and then spend about 3 minutes on Google

Oh, and the smudges look like the right colour for the number too!

Yes mine had a serial there too. It was bought from the late  Oldgit of this parish

Totally agree, suspect the neck plate also . Mine On the jb62 was plain

the pick guard shouldn’t have that truss rod cutout, or be black

just remembered I had this p bass model exactly too (briefly) - it had a white scratch plate for sure and a plain neck plate.

Those neck plates crop up on 1990’s MIJ fenders quite often. Seen a fair few.

Perhaps it changed after my jazz was made (in 86/87 IIRC). Don’t recall the p bass year but it was definitely plain plate

Yup, standard PB 62 from late 80s early 90s, hootenanny, that neck plate seen quite a few before, the serial number under the made in Japan will be one letter 6 numbers. Probably non export.
