wishface
I bought Simplified Sight Reading For Bass, by Josquin De Pres, and while it has audio it only has it for some of the tracks. The exercises are great and the book is well laid out, but only half the tracks (and the easier ones to boot) have accompanying audio. That's a bit frustrating. Is there any free and easy to use software I can download that will allow me to input notes so that I can hear how a tricky part should sound? Thanks
lowdown
Steinberg, Dorico 3 SE is free. It only has two Instrument tracks, but perfect for what you want. Notation and Tab. There is a Dorico tutorial channel on YouTube, so you will be up and running pretty quickly. https://new.steinberg.net/dorico/se/
Guest
Musescore is also free - it’s mostly for transcription rather than as a recording roll but I’m increasingly impressed at how fully-featured it is considering it is free!

Yes, great for transcription & very acceptable for engraving (with a lot of good features). Like you say, (amazingly) it's free. Unfortunately, it doesn't support VST, as far as I know. Although, there are clumsy work arounds for it. So for play back, it's a case of relying on GM sounds.
Crawford13
Guitar Pro 7 will let you do what you want to do. To my limited knowledge it only lets you use its on VST’s though.
