Well i figured since we have a thread for just about every other make of bass amplification in the world we might as well have one of these eh?

Here's my "rig":

and the amplification head in it's current environment.
I used to have one of the old Goliath's. (I think I was the first person in Newcastle to get one, got it from Rock City (RIP)) It was awesome!!

I also got an SM400 with it, and that was sh**e!

Was just reading back thro' this thread & noticed Bassbod's Mr Tone Control, wow !!
You don't see many of them at all, what a rarity !!. On my first look i thought it was a grand prix
pre-amp.

Here is a poor pic of my SWR - a 4x8 and 1x15 from the early 90's. And a Hifi speaker!

Really nice gear - fairly light and sounds superb. Job's a good'un

Posted

It's the left channel of my stereo... nowhere else to put the speaker. They are too far apart really but my living room is the wrong sort of shape what with the Vdrums in the other corner!

Well spotted on the Mr Tone controls - a fairly recent addition from our very own Walbassist (a man of taste...and a few splendid basses). It seems to be most useful as a high pass filter, to keep the rumbles away on loud gigs. Not that I'm doing many loud ones at the mo... It really is a dream eq - dead quiet but powerful and extremely accurate. It could easily take you a whole soundcheck to disappear up your own rear port...if you let it.

I've managed to take some more pics of my Swr gear, hope you like it.

First up my trusty SM400s a great tweekers amp, not a plug & play amp, some great sounds can be
coaxed from these.

Next up is my big gig rack, my Swr st800 poweramp & grand prix preamp.

A beautiful sounding Baby baby blue combo, its so versatile & can be used with my goliath junior 2 x10
for a small gig rig. Cab in one hand, combo in the other. Can also be used as a standalone rig.

Some seem to forget back in the late 80's early nineties Swr was one of the few manufacturers making
small lightweight bass cabs.

Oh! A special mention should go to fellow basschatter (mrbassman) Keith.
Cheers mate.

I've already posted this in the 'show us your rig' thread, but it really belongs here amongst fellow SWR enthusiasts :)

My new 'big' rig:

SWR SM1500 + 2 x Golly III 4x10's

Used it last night at a pub rock gig and I may just have reached my personal tonal nirvana

i got mine about 6 months ago and it's all i play through.

With regards to SM400's...go easy on the bass. I never have mine over half as that sub just isn't useable at all.
You can get plenty of thump without it.. and I think they got that feature wrong the 1st time round and had to correct it with later models

The 4 stage/band para is great...and again might be overkill.

I am currently running all basses flat from the amp as the basses have enough EQ on them anyway. Never been happier with that amp.
Would I add a SM900....hmmm..?? I always though I would like that..but atm, no need.

The SM400 is light enough outside a rack at 18 lbs, IIRC..

Always rated the Goli model of cabs... those cabs take some beating and there is no excuse for these being boomy...IMO....

and....... my amp tech likes them as he says they are built well, but in 18 yrs or so, the only time it (SM 400 ) let me down was when it was crashed down onto the stage under power ..it complained about that but was quickly sorted.

Quality gear, IMV

Here's an old Baby Blue - very nice it is too, although I know the speaker surrounds will eventually fall apart. Must have been a revelation when it was introduced, way back when...

That's lovely. I'll have to get a shot of my SWR SM400 to add on here. Nothing special to look at, but a 20 year old head that still functions perfectly (and sounds amazing) might be considered sort of special... :)

One of the reasons I like mine is that they are older, well known technology. Fairly easy to get repaired when necessary and don't appear to need much in the way of specialist parts. That will change over time, and they seem to be closed for business now..but they are not in the "disposable"if anything goes wrong class.

They've got issues - heat build up can be frightening, noisy fans, the extreme low end can kill speakers, exact replacement speakers probably aren't made these days, the tweeters fry (if you turn them on and use them) the aluminium fronts can bend (done that too) they are stoneage heavy etc etc But overall, I've found them to be very well built, reliable and good sounding designs.

You made me realise how old my amp is... when ask i alway say : "it is pretty old", but if i count the years it is more than 20 years old... damn... :)

If you pop the top off you'll see the date of production hand-written on top of the transformer chassis.

Classy chassis ;)
