bassace
Did anyone see the documentary on BBC Two last night. 2 hours of pure gold - at least up to the Quintet. Amazing quantity of good archive film and a great story of his life and loves. And the music was excellent, the double bass sound, particularly Paul Chambers, superb. Get it on catchup; you won’t be disappointed. 3
Len_derby
Yes, really looking forward to watching this. Last night wasn’t a good time to do so. 🍻 I can recommend a read of his autobiography too. Not least because he was as inventive in his use of swearing as he was in his music. The Don Cheadle bio-pic ‘Miles Ahead’ is good too.
nilebodgers
It was possible to play a cracking game of buzzword-bingo on the word "cool". I lost count...
bassace
Well, how many times have you heard the word ‘soul’ by all and sundry? Cool might be outdated but, believe me, it was the only show in town in the sixties.
chris_b
Loved it. He was a unique musician.
oldslapper
Yes watched it too. What great players he had around him, loved Ron Carter telling him to do one when asked to change to electric. 😊
Mykesbass
Been a very long week, but it sounded wonderful as I kept falling in and out of conciousness on the sofa! iPlayer later.
fleabag
Saw it, loved it. Jeeez he was one fecked up mutha, despite his genius. I cackled when Carter told MD to feck off, as did mr Slapper Nice to see some Wayne Shorter action too

Some of the stories made for uncomfortable listening/viewing. I knew a little of his life previously, but the film was genuinely eye-opening and inspiring, certainly from a musical perspective. I hadn’t realised at all how he went about doing the (improvisational) soundtrack to Ascenseur pour l’echafaud and how it pretty much changed his approach thereafter - less charts and more improvisational; requiring the players to step up and deliver themselves. An excellent film...

Recently read the autobiography, a real eye opener and notable for the fact it's a who's-who of jazz with Miles claiming he had to teach each of these great musicians how to play in the way he wanted with one notable exception: Marcus Miller. He speaks really warmly on Marcus which in the context of this book is unique!

Also, telling Wayne Shorter to bring "the book" on the next recording session... 😂 I enjoyed it, good stuff.
