Zummerbass Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 My JJ Jazz has developed a rattling neck. It hasn’t been dropped or knocked I haven’t adjusted the truss rod and i’ve checked and tightened any machine head screws etc. I acquired this bass used about 4 yrs as a backup so doesn’t get used a lot. Problem has only reared it’s head in last couple of months. Any ideas? Anyone else experienced this? Quote
gary mac Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 If you haven't already, then have a check of the truss rod nut. It may have worked loose. Quote
hooky_lowdown Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Also check if the one of the machine heads isn't loose and is the cause of the rattling noise? 1 Quote

Zummerbass Posted March 15, 2020 Author Posted March 15, 2020 Pretty sure it’s not machineheads, only recently checked and retightened them. I’ll slacken off and re set truss rod. Righty righty lefty loosely? Quote
Zummerbass Posted March 15, 2020 Author Posted March 15, 2020 Try that again-righty righty lefty loosey? Quote
AndyTravis Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 If you have the Allen key in at the headstock and go towards the bass strings, you’ll tighten it. go towards treble and you’re loosening it. Quote
Zummerbass Posted March 23, 2020 Author Posted March 23, 2020 Spot on assessment of rattle coming from machinehead(s). I’ve replaced the 4th string machinehead and it’s done the trick. Tuning pegs would seem to be the Achilles heal of these instruments. Thanks guys! Quote
