The arrival of a fretless into my arsenal off basses last week prompted me to seek out some more fretless playing. Loaded i-pod with three Mick karn albums and went out for most of the day in manchester, listening to as much as possible whilst on bus and in between pints of Stella.
have to say, I'm suprised, some wiered and freaky stuff going on, some hints of "Japan" in there, but on the whole, very enjoyable, album names to follow when stella drains from my system

"Bestial Cluster" has got some good stuff on it. Not too impressed with JBK (Jansen , Barbieri and Karn) but then where could he go after the genius that was Japan...

It is excellent, but I may not be the best person to answer that being a shade biased on the subject.
If you can find Poly Town and Liquid Glass they are also excellent. Poly Town can be hard work to start with but has my favourite guitaist in it David Torn.
Bestial Cluster has some stunning bass work as does Tooth Mother but I find it quiet hard going to listen to the whole album.
Each Eye A Path has the bass a little less obvious but is a really good album.
More Better Different is along the same lines as EEAP and one of my favourite Karn albums.
One of my favourite albums of all time is the Rain Tree Crow album which is all the members of Japan. The bass is subtle and beautifully done within the songs a really class album and well worth getting a hold of.

I've always had a soft spot for Mick Karn's bassery.... a very unique player... :P

+1 for Liquid Glass (with Yoshihihiro Hanno) & Polly Town (with David Torn & Terry Bozzio)

& Three part species - master ...classic Karn weirdness!

I liked Dali's car ;) ....some very inventive bass playing!

I'm a bit of an MK fan I must say - the Japan album "Tin Drum" album is as good a place as any to start.

He's readily admits to Percy Jones being a big influence - indeed he got into fretless through hearing Percy Jones on Eno's Another Green World album.

Another great British fretless player to try out if you haven't heard him before.....

+1 to Percy Jones! ...Brand x - 'unorthodox behaviour' & 'livestock' great albums that blew me away when I 1st heard them... & what he's doing with Tunnels these days has that magic still.... Not every ones cup of tea, I can understand.... but it's 'twiddly' jazz that has buckets of soul.... unlike some more famous exponents of the twiddly jazz world that leave me cold.....
