There is an old thread on BC about this, but I'm not good at posting links. 

1) get the bass line completely nailed.

2) practice, practice, practice.

My extra points...

3) be entirely comfortable with the singing... in my case I found that singing in a higher register was easier.

4) I simplified the basslines under the singy bits, then after loads of practice, I found I could put the more complicated bass back. But I reckon that good bvs make more of an impact than fancy bass.
