Barking Spiders
I'll have to make the shameful confession that I wasn't really that aware of Guy or his work, which is all the worse as I see he played on the first two Orb albums which are among my faves. Anyway, that bassline is a cracker although I thought the song was by the Kane Gang. Anyway, they're Geordies too so I'm in the right ball park. I'll certainly be checking out more of GP's lockdown licks so good call viz the OP Edited May 15, 2020 by Barking Spiders

If you enjoy 'Toy Matinee' I recommend searching out Kevin Gilbert's solo CDs 'Thud', 'Nuts' & his rock opera 'Shaming Of The True'. 'Bolts' is also worth a listen too... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Gilbert_(musician) Kevin Gilbert was the driving force (with Pat Leonard) behind Toy Matinee, an original member (& writer) behind the 'Tuesday Night Music Club' and, according to almost everyone who worked with him.... a musical genius/prodigy. Sadly he passed away at a young age and his talent is much missed 😢 Third Matinee, though it has it's moments isn't a patch on Toy Matinee as it doesn't have the magic that Kevin brought to the table.... Had a quick listen on YT to his other stuff and there's a definite talent going on. Can't quite say what makes it different but i think he has a very distinct voice. Saw him on YT playing Kashmir live and even that was an excellent version altho i'm not a huge Zep fan. I'll post on the What are you listening to thread. cetera
That bassline is very 'Boogie Oogie Oogie' by Taste Of Honey... Also, Yay! 'Queen Of Misery' by Toy Matinee coming soon. Cool!
dmccombe7
I'm not really a disco fan but i have to admit to liking that song when it came out. It does have a catchy vocal not sure if the melody or her voice that does it. Bass player aint too shabby either. Dave
jezzaboy
Rather a dodgy looking pic on the youtube feed above. Looks like Guy sat on something.

ubit
I had obviously heard this song many times but I have never actually listened to the bass. It's not so prominent on the finished song. That is a brilliant bass line!

geoham
Great bassline. Seems like its mixed criminally low on the record though!

police squad
I had to pick up a bass and learn this, it was soooo good. I love the way he talks about brushing his hand across the strings, that percussive thing. I've started to try it, and it's making me play without a pick. But then I play fingers, pick and just thumb sometimes. You should all read Guy's book. It's really interesting

He's got a really nice lick at the start of this where he does two triplet pull-offs then a raked muted triplet into an open hit on the bottom E (I believe a 'diddly-diddly-diddly-bom' is the technical term). I spent a bit of time getting the rake down and it's great fun to drop into a song. Of course it sounds like a bag of spanners if you don't nail it rhythmically... https://youtu.be/VL6v4BnitoU Edited May 24, 2020 by borntohang

I can do it ok, but never really find the right time to do it. In fact i can do it better when playing pick style without a pick. I just noticed all that fret buzz in Guys latest video. That would drive me nuts if my bass did that, and it has driven me nuts in the past, but then you hear it in context and its all gone. Just goes to show. The more eagle-eyed may notice that his flies are undone in the second piece...! He did put something on Facebook asking if he should re-shoot it, which would take time to do, or just upload it anyway. He has obviously gone with the prevailing view to just put it out in all its glory as it is... yesss. in ya face slap haters😁😉. Actually I was more innerested in his playing than to check whether his flies were up or down!
