Dropzone
Hi Guys I see there is a lightweight cab thread, but I am looking to downsize my Hartke rig from a 3500 amp, 1 x 15 + 2x 10 cabs. I am hoping to get just one cambo that will deliver a similar sound but just the size of a 1 x 15 or 2 x 10 cab. IE I am after a loud, lighweight, small combo. It does need to be man enough to provide a backline for small gigs? I am aware of the Markbass and Eden Nemesis but have yet to try either out. Are there any others out there you recommend I should try? Many thanks in advance Mike www.dropzone-band.com

Just bear in mind that a heavier and thus cheaper head plus a lightweight cab will be louder and less expensive than a combo whose total weight is less but whose single-lift weight is greater. How much effort is it really to plug in a speaker lead? Alex

Matt
+1 for Mark Bass. I've got the Jeff Berlin combo, and it is simply brilliant. And a fraction of the weight of my old Ashdown. Hamster
Gallien Kruger MB150S sounded ok when I had a diddle with it in some West End shop. - http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=1970

I nearly bought a second hand Jeff Berlin but couldn't quite agree a price as I am on the South Coast and would have had to travel to Wales to pick it up. I do wish they had put the amp down the back to reduce the size. I really like the look of the Mesa but I think the price will make it prohibitive. I would ideally like a 1 x 12 but appreciate for the money I have I may need to go 1 x 15 or 2 x 10 to get the volume I need. Anyone know of a bargain Mesa around ;-) Ever the optomist. lozbass
I've found the Epifani compbos to be pretty marvellous but I've only had experience of the ul112 - I suspect the ul210 might fit your needs but they're extremely expensive (moreso in the last month or two given the crash of sterling)
dannybuoy
I have the CMD121P (I got mine 2nd hand for £500) and highly recommend it; although the slightly bigger 121H is meant to sound better. Awesome clean but warm sound, and I have a VT Bass pedal to dial in the old school Ampeg tones. Although I'm not gigging at the moment, I've heard of plenty of people who have gigged with just CMD121P by itself, but you can always get the extension cab later for extra oomph. machinehead
I have gigged the markbass 121P combo on its own quite a lot and it's surprisingly loud. One rig I had before, which was very versatile, was a Markbass LMII, and a pair of Markbass 102 traveller cabs. Use one cab (on its side) for small gigs, use two cabs (Stacked 4 speakers high) for larger gigs. The volume with just one cab is really surprising though. xgsjx
I have the CMD102P too. Top bit of kit & surprisingly loud & can really get the lows shaking & weighs less than my 30 watt vox combo which measures about a third of the size! If you're near Dunblane on a monday night you can come & have a blast. Edit... It's loud enough for small to medium gigs without PA & if you needed more you can add a cab for the bigger gigs (or causing subsidence). bass_ferret
You really do get a lot more choice with head and cab. The EBS Neo combo's are great but not cheap. Still not convinced about Markbass. Seen a few gigs with guys using it and I have not been impressed. May sound great on stage mind.

Norris
If you can find one (I've personally never seen another one), a Peavey Databass dishes out awesome power for it's size. I have amazed many people that a 1x15 combo can make such a noise. And at the end of the gig, it slips easily into the boot of my car. I wouldn't describe it as light, but it's easy enough for one person to carry about. Stop the press ... there's one on ebay! The first I've ever seen on there. 1 day remaining, item number 130287806623. £199 with no bids as I type. solo4652
3 months ago, I too was on the hunt for a lightweight, good quality, cheap combo. I bought a new Roland D-bass 115 from Rockin Rooster for £420. I was shocked to see they are now £760 See: http://www.rockingrooster.co.uk/product_info.php?PID=1803 300 watts, weighs 25Kg Cracking combo. I've played through 4 different rigs since buying it and nothing has come close to it yet.

My friends moan when I ask them to help me with the Roland. "Good job it's not a heavy one", I generally say.
