burno70
I'm looking to learn some Jazz pieces to help improve my technique. I quite like Jaco and Weather Report. Can anyone recommend a good starting point? Thanks
edstraker123
I'd start by buying a funny hat - you can't play proper jazz without one ! Bilbo
Start with 'Black Market' of the 'Black Market' CD or the '8.30' live recording (there are versions on Youtube)

XB26354
Port of Entry from Night Passage. If that doesn't give you a work out, nothing will.
lee650
"Barbary coast" from the black market was always my favourite, funky as hell

GonzoBass
Havona off Heavy Weather was transcribed a little while back in Bass Player Magazine.
burno70
some cool suggestions in there thanks folks. I think I'll have to swerve Teen Town for the time being - need to work up to that level!
AdamWoodBass
Teen Town is great but if you're only just starting to learn Jaco's stuff it will NOT be easy. I've been working on that one tune for about 2 years now and I'm only just starting to nail it cleanly. With Jaco there really isn't much in the way of easy stuff, if I were to recommend something to get you started learn the big band version of "The Chicken" with the "Soul Intro". If you're any good at playing harmonics you might want to try "Portrait of Tracey" but be warned it's quite difficult, again probably took me the best part of a year to get that one nailed. A really nice one if you can do false harmonics is "Birdland" from the Heavy Weather album, not too challanging but a lovely bass line. If you happen to be an amazing bass player you could always have a go at "Havona" but even The Yellowjacket's Jimmy Haslip struggled with this one (there's a really funny vid here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKXeMj27jDg)
thisnameistaken
Tunes like Barbary Coast and The Chicken are good places to start. All Jaco's common "licks" are in those tunes and they're easy and fun to play.
Prosebass
How about this ? Black Market is a good place to start, personally I prefer Alphonso Johnson especially "Herandnu" 1' 18" onwards is sublime
AdamWoodBass
Just been down to the library and borrowed the Weather Report Forcats: Tomorrow boxed set. It's sooooooooo good!
burno70
Think I'm gonna have a go at Come on Come over - some lush killer riffs in there. It's gonna take time tho! Thanks for all your suggestions
