Kuato
I've been getting a bunch of background distortion and I thought it was my amp, but I just figured out that it was coming from the horn in my Ampeg SVT-410HE. I turned the horn level all the way down on the back of the cab and the distortion is virtually gone. However, the horn is still technically working aside from that. Does this mean the horn is blown? Oddly, I checked the crossover and the safety bulbs look fine. They haven't burned out or anything. Should I order a replacement horn? Also, how difficult would it be to replace that myself? I removed the grill on the front of the cab and took the horn screws out to try to see what model it is, but the horn seems stuck in place. Am I missing some necessary step to remove the horn? NJE
I don’t know the cab at all, but there will be a way to access it from the front or back somehow. Never heard of a horn/tweeter being glued in place so I’m surprised the screws didn’t release it, pictures might help. Regarding replacing horns/tweeters, I had a tweeter go in an Aguilar cab and thought I would need a whole new unit which would have been a big chunk of money. It turned out it was just a broken diaphragm in the tweeter which was a couple of pounds to replace but you just need to find out some info on the unit.
Kuato
Thanks. Since my original post, I was able to remove the horn and determine that it wasn't the problem. I've narrowed it down to either the power amp section of the head or something else with the cab. Dropped it off with a tech yesterday. BassmanPaul
It could well be that just the horn diaphragm needs to be replaced. Contact Ampeg Customer Support for a replacement.
