Propaghandi, particularly when he swapped from a Musicman to a cheaper Ibanez

Tool, particularly on the 10,000 Days record.

Fugazi on the Repeater album

Best live bass tone I've heard was Yob at the Camden Underworld, Ric into a SVT and mixed perfectly by the engineer.

Some links for these

I really like Nathan East's tone on that Eric Clapton recording - basically what I aspire to with my covers band

Brian Helicopter (Gareth Holder) of the early punk band The Shapes, great Ric sound, of course it's to do with how high in the mix it is as well, bit like JJ in the Stranglers was higher in the mix than normal, which is why it's noticed, not that it's not a great bass sound anyway

No the studio version. You’ve taken a shine to your new sound because it’s new and different. It’ll become the norm/mediocre in a week or two. The joy of ampeg tone on albums is that it always has that vibe but always mixed for the respective  albums. The Bronx, Jimmy Eat World, Hole etc etc all have that ampeg sound but it fits in with what they do when mixed to do so.

I agree, the tone on Celebrity Skin is immense! However I never paid it any attention until I saw Captain Marvel at the cinema. Hearing that song through the cinema surround sound during the end credits was something else!

I’ve loved this tone since I first saw this video years ago.

Firstly a good bass tone is entirely subjective. There are a couple of examples here that would probably cause me to replace all my gear if I sounded like that because I dislike them so much.

Secondly IME it is more about how the bass sound fits in with the rest of the instruments than the actual bass sound itself. If you listened to any of the examples given as a solo'd track you'd be surprised by how different it sounds outside of the context of the arrangement and production, and probably more than a little disappointed with the sound.

I discovered long ago that just because a particular instrument sounds great on a record doesn't mean that I was going to be able to use that sound for the same instrument in my band and still have it sound good.

Tiran Porter’s tone on this track sends shivers down my spine!

Apologies for the God bothering content but I think the tone on this song is a great pick sound...

Ironically reminds me a bit of Tony Butler’s tone back in the day with Big Country.

Rather less God bothering... For all their Percy Jones-esque jazzy refinement those old Pro Series Wals could belt out a killer rock sound...

And finally, always loved John Wetton’s bass tone on that first Asia album. The stabs about 1 min 50secs in are just immense, tone wise!

I love the sound that Richard Bona gets on the Reverence album, and I think it's a great fit with the styles of music. Here's a couple of examples. Where he drops down to the pedal note in Suninga at 0.42 it still sends shivers down my spine. TIme to break the headphones out.

The late Paul Raven on bass, in the video he is using a Status bass but that doesn't mean the recording was done with a Status but personally this has always been my favourite bass guitar / drums sound combination

Killing Joke are ace full stop. Still love the "Extremities" album.

Killer bass sounds?
