Jeff29361 Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Hi guys I'm looking to change the decal on an old bass I have, I have a new one with my daughter's name on it, the headstock is finished, do I just sand down, clean, apply, refinish? Quote
hooky_lowdown Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Remove all the hardware, sand down the front of headstock until the logo is removed, make sure you use super fine sandpaper (2000 grit) lastly so surface is silky smooth, then make sure the headstock is clean and apply the decal. Leave it to dry then you need to add clear coat over the headstock to seal and protect the decal, leave for a couple days to cure. Then polish up. This is an abbreviated series of steps, but gives you an idea of what's involved. The finished look will be nowhere near as professional looking as it currently is. There are many video tutorials on YouTube. 1 Quote
Jeff29361 Posted April 14, 2020 Author Posted April 14, 2020 (edited) Thank you, professional finish isn't what I'm going for so not an issue the body is going to be Futurama comics 😂 I'll start prep today, thanks again Edited April 14, 2020 by Jeff29361 Extra word for some reason 1 1 Quote
Jeff29361 Posted April 14, 2020 Author Posted April 14, 2020 Just had to order some new machine head screws, never looked at the screws before, they are properly rounded Quote
Dan Dare Posted April 14, 2020 Posted April 14, 2020 Make sure there is still some finish on the face of the peghead. Applying a decal to bare wood does not work very well. 1 Quote
Jeff29361 Posted April 14, 2020 Author Posted April 14, 2020 I'm going to get some 2000 grit, sand it flat put 2 light coats of laquor in sand that back a bit then apply, thank you 2 Quote
Jeff29361 Posted April 18, 2020 Author Posted April 18, 2020 Laquored waiting a few days to flatten it Quote
Jeff29361 Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 Decal on, waiting for it to fully dry then I'll seal it 5 Quote
Dan Dare Posted April 29, 2020 Posted April 29, 2020 Looks good. I have a Dinky Toys decal on the headstock of my Bitsa. Always fun when people ask what make it is and then look closely at it. I tried to get a Hotpoint decal, but couldn't find one. 2 Quote
Maude Posted April 29, 2020 Posted April 29, 2020 I assume it's a waterslide decal @Jeff29361, built up your lacquer in very light coats, allowing to tack off quite well between coats. It's quite easy to melt waterslide decals with the solvent if you get the lacquer too wet. Apologies if you're already aware of this. 🙂 Quote

mikebass456 Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Great job! Have done a couple myself, and they're trickier than they look to get right.........😀👍 Quote
Jakester Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Looks good. Just out of interest, where did you get the decal? Quote

Have a look on eBay (search for 'instrument decals'). People will make them to order. I had this made up (can't remember the guy's name who did it, I'm afraid) and intend to put it on the Bitsa when I get around to it. Edited May 2, 2020 by Dan Dare 1 Quote
