The Secret To Pino Palladino’s Fretless Sound

I’ve made a video about Pino’s sublime fretless bass line on the intro to Paul Young’s, Wherever I Lay My Hat. 
 

Pino quotes an interesting source for part of the melody.  Anyone know who that source is?

I was going to say the answer was a Stingray until I saw the Jazz! I'd still like a fretless 'Ray some day, Every Time You Go Away is one of my favourite bass lines.

It was one of the first songs I learnt when I made my fretless, as well as several other Pino songs. Fantastic player.

Pino did use a Stingray for the track. I haven’t got a fretless Stingray or I would have used it in my video.
