lukeward2004 Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Hi Guys, In the last few months, ive been slogging away in the studio with my new funk band, Project13, working on getting a covers set down with a view to playing corporate events, weddings and that sort of thing. We have managed to get the first hour of the show down, however I have asked each member of the band to think of 2 tracks, one modern and one old, that we could use for the second set. Problem is, my mind has drawn a blank! Ideally im looking at tracks that are by bands with a similar lineup to ourselves - Drums, Bass, Male lead Vocals, Keys, Lead Guitar and Rhythm Guitar. So far our set is as follows: Stevie Wonder - Supersticious, Higher Ground, Master Blaster Tower of Power - Diggin' on James Brown, Soul with a Capital S Jamiroquai - High Times, Too Young to Die, Runaway Jill Scott - Golden Modjo - Lady George Benson - Turn your Love Around Brand New Heavies - Never Stop + others, im sure ive forgotten one or two! Can anyone suggest any tunes in the funk/soul vein that we could use? So far, our singer wants to do "Heard it through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye, and Macy Gray's "Sexual Healing" - but we are running out of ideas! Help! Quote
The Funk Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 (edited) You could, nay should, try some Ohio Players. Love Rollercoaster, Skin Tight and Fire. You could also try Chuck Brown - Bustin' Loose. Then there's the entire Parliament-Funkadelic catalogue: Tear The Roof Off, Red Hot Mama, Supergroovalisticposifunkstication, Flashlight etc. There's so much more but it depends on what kind of sound you're after. Oh yeah, can't forget Curtis Mayfield. EDIT: D'oh, how can I forget Sly? Edited August 13, 2007 by The Funk Quote
Kiwi Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 We had great fun playing "Hey Ya" by Outkast at rehearsal on yesterday - but we do have 6 singers to cover the harmonies and vocal improvs. The tune is really simple but its got a nice sassy fun feel to it. Quote
lukeward2004 Posted August 13, 2007 Author Posted August 13, 2007 Nice Idea Syed, ill look them up. Kiwi, covered "hey ya" before, at a few gigs, but not sure about it - will keep it in mind though.... Quote
The Funk Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 (edited) Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), If You Want Me To Stay - Sly & The Family Stone. Those two are awesome. EDIT: George Benson does a seriously funky cover of Nature Boy. You could try that, seeing as you already have one G B tune in there. Edited August 13, 2007 by The Funk Quote
Tinman Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Probably been done to death but here goes: Blame it on the boogie-The Jacksons, Play that funky music-Wild Cherry, Midnight hour-Wilson Pickett. Something I tried with a previous band was a funked up version of Feel like makin' love-Bad Company, never gigged it but it really grooves if you get the mood right. (Apologies if my suggestions are too obvious) Pete Quote
bassbloke Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 What line up do you have? What about the theme tune to Starsky and Hutch by James Taylor Quartet. Quote
The Funk Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 You could try some Brothers Johnson. A little cheesy but great bass parts. Quote
