bass_ferret
Most of its already been covered but late era Temptations was seriously funky and so is lots of Stevie Wonder. I cant believe no one has mentioned James Brown - too obvious maybe. Have you got horns? I've often thought function bands with horns can get a bit dull doing the stax/motown etc to death and really should do 5:15 just to show they can rock. The Funk
James Brown is hard to do well.
wotnwhy
Just get hold of the Funk Drops records and the Eccentric Soul records. You'll never be the same.
Amen brother! seriously, he means it. and i second it a great modern one to do is Beyonce - Work it out. We do it in a 3 piece (bass, drums, guitar), and it works great!

EDIT: Looks like I might have heard a later, more retro, less MIDI cover of it. Edited September 7, 2007 by The Funk
Happy Jack
If you're doing weddings and such, some tunes they might recognise would help. Think about about Average White Band - Pick Up The Pieces gives the singer a rest - then going into Wild Cherry with Play That Funky Music (White Boy). Finish the trilogy with just about anything by KC and the Sunshine Band, my favourite being That's The Way I Like It (Uh-huh Uh-huh). See? You're humming it now, aren't you?
