Clarky
New bass month and new thumbrest week, obv. Recently acquired '51 CS Precision which, despite not being the short scale I have gravitated to was so appealing as its where the modern electric bass started. Also happens to play very nicely. Arrived with pale maple thumbrest which looked a bit off kilter. Then thanks to the generosity of @Rick's Fine '52, who (as the forum expert on old Fenders) I had asked about the bass, it is now wearing a black maple thumbrest. Before and after pics below.
Cat Burrito
Love it! I had two of the Japanese ones and a Squier one, none of which I have kept and it's the only model I regret not keeping.
rze99
That's beautiful! Right choice to swap out the natural rest I think. Here's a really nice 54 tribute parts build I bought from @Sparky Mark
Lozz196
For some reason, even though I’ve only used one of these basses in one band, and then only for a short while, and no longer have one, I just think there’s something special about them. I can’t quantify it, but there’s something about them.

That’s the best I can do!
hooky_lowdown
Damn you guys. Stop posting pics of 51's - you're not helping my GAS. I miss that big, fat, warm single coil tone. 😫

Mine purrs like a contented cat - an original '57 (with Clive Brown refin). It just makes me smile 😊

Build one this slab is getting contoured but will be a 51-54 type P, long way to go, doing it mainly by hand, chisel, spoke shave, rasp saw, except a bit of orbital sanding

The beauty of lockdown life atm!
Cuzzie
I know! This was a big lump of Ash from someone’s garden! I am still working normally being NHS, but as there is no going out when not working, and the kids aren’t doing the usual 800 clubs Technically I have more ‘free time’. Defo the spoke shave and rasp saw are saviours here, that was an old photo and it’s further on now. I may have to buy an actual router though for the pick up as I am going no pickguard, and also a rear cavity which will help with the weight
Grahambythesea
Hasn’t anyone ever thought of doing a hollow body ‘slab’ precision. It would seem to lend itself to the concept and get over the weight issues everyone seems to complain about.

I'm not concerned about an extra few ounces; the contours make a much bigger difference in forearm playing comfort.
