I read on some forum or other (don't think it was this one) that not filling in the gaps could cause the neck to bow when the strings were tightened

I did this years ago, and got some thin strips of light coloured veneer from a furniture restoration shop and just glued them in - instant fretlines

Not it's wrong, but I think I'd take that with a pinch of salt...

+1, plenty of people don't fill the gaps and they've been fine.

Cheers guys as I say there is a bit of set up that still needs doing but I'm going to leave that till have the space to do it.

Played 'Love Cats' on it and it sounded great.
