I picked up this beast a while back, I don’t do metalwork but I’m sure I’ll use it for something 😁

I clamp my backsaws in mine for sharpening. How much do you use your block plane? I've got one but prefer a bench plane.

Ply I have, 12mm from memory. Would you cut the break out and square it off, or just leave it as is?

I'd make the rebate deeper and face it with solid wood but grain vertical.

But I'm a metal basher so don't trust my wood vice advice...

I love real Record Vices (pre-Irwin 🙂 )

I have a No. 3 and was delighted to spot a Record No. 1 in Dad's... living room.

Hopefully the huge 4" QR vice I used as a teenager is somewhere in Dad's workshop.

Me again. After facing the vice with a square of 12mm ply and taking the opportunity to make the top of the chop wider I now need to put an apron on the bench. It's never bloody ending this tinkering. Anyway...

A big sheet of ply or something solid wood?

If it’s for rigidity Si, I’d go for solid, and it also won’t splinter if you catch it loading pieces on and off 🙂
