Piers_Williamson
I got myself an ex-library copy of 'Bass Culture', the picture book of John Entwhistle's bass collection (which I enjoy a lot more than Geddie's book). I did find myself puzzling over what's going on here: Can anyone enlighten me?
visog
Ok I'll chime in with a guess that he's flicking the string in a sort of flamenco motion... The downward motion to his 'thunderfingers' tapping up stroke.
Dad3353
I think that those are 'slo-mo' photos of Entwistle's 'flicking' technique, rather like a flamenco 'rasqueado', where each curled-up finger rolls open, striking the strings as they go. Very percussive, and needing extremely low action.
hooky_lowdown
You're looking at it up-side-down??
malbass
I don’t think that’s a shot of him playing. The hand is there to provide scale against the mini model of the Thunderbird bass?

Jonesy
He had quite the collection, must be a cracker of a book. I don't suppose there's any pics of his acoustic Ovations in there by chance?

Piers_Williamson
Your wish is my command. There are many fascinating and obscure parts of his collection. I think that's partly what makes it so interesting (and then there are the Alembics of course :))

I was lucky enough to get that black Ovation in the Sothebys auction in 2003 and have been trying to find some sort of a pic of him with it or anything to help associate him with it. The closest I've found so far is the vid below where he's playing the natural model. So maybe the black one was his backup for the tour? I'll keep an eye out for the book.
