Mike Bungo
Hi all I’ve just picked up one of these. Can anyone tell me anything about them. I know it’s a high frequency add on but could it handle an ELF for home practice or is this not what it’s all about Cheers Mike
BassmanPaul
It's for reproducing highs and only highs. It's not a full range speaker suitable for home practice.
prowla
I have wondered if the speakers in these could be replaced by full-range ones; however, the size of the cabinet is small too and physics would come into play.
la bam
I'm going way back, but I remember these being referred to as 'bright boxes'.
Deedee
As has been said, a bright box from the late eighties/early nineties. I believe they were first introduced in 'multi-stack' form with the MkV range.
la bam
Wow! That's a proper stack!
BassmanPaul
Not really. A 1x15 has no hope of keeping up with a 4x10. Eventually the 15 will be damaged.
la bam
Nah, the trace rigs always sounded great. That was the go to set up a decade or two ago.
BassmanPaul
Why do you think the pairing fell out of favour?

TheGreek
As @la bam says "Brightboxes"...I have one...ideal "as well as", not "instead of"... Though some may disagree, they add some colour to your tone when using a bigger cab. If you're looking for something to pair with your Elf see if you can find a 1x10 extension cab which came with the BLX range - easier said than done but they do come up on eBay occasionally. IIRC I paid around £75 for mine.

I honestly think that the pairing came about because Marketing wanted to show as many products as they could in one advert. A 4x10 can go lower and louder than a single 15 and some 15s can go higher than the 4x10.
Mike Bungo
Guys can I ask. I’ve plugged it in to my extension link On my cab and it’s silent. Will this only make a noise with a real high frequencies or am I looking at an issue. All 4 speakers are working Thanks in advance Mike
prowla
Does it need a 4-wire cable? <= Sorry, wrong thread! Edited May 10, 2020 by prowla
stevie
It's likely to be an open circuit somewhere along the line. Check the wiring from the output through to the midrange drivers. A multimeter would help.

prowla
I just noticed that my TE 2x10 has a couple of those speakers in it.

Is that the shallow (front to back) one, same depth as the combos? They’re pretty rare now. 2x10” and 2x5”
