Evening all.

Has anyone ever built a bass body out of sections with the glue joints perpendicular to the strings?

I have a vision of the whole thing folding itself in half and the section with the bridge on smacking me in the face.

Thoughts?

Is the grain going to be perpendicular to the strings as well?

In theory a good joint is as strong as the wood right? None of my amateur scarf-jointed headstocks have failed yet, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

You could always put some kind of rod through the length of it, just to be on the safe side.

Yes, the same as a normal two plank body, only rotated through 90 degrees.

I'm actually thinking of a multi laminate blank at 45°, 90 was a worst case scenario!

I'm also, now, thinking of a battenburg effect, like one of those alternating block chopping boards that are all over YouTube...

I need sleep...

Glues are really strong. Even the Sydney Opera house was glued together. The practical forces that act in those joints are far less than a break point.

If you are interested in glues look at some of the data sheets. I used to build and race single seat electric race cars. I used a mix of carbon honeycomb and aluminium extrusions for the monocoques, all glued together with 3M DP410 full structural adhesive. It is ridiculously strong stuff.
