Nowt wrong with a Squier IMO.

I've been using a Squier '57 JV series precision ( Salmon pink (!!!!) with a tortoiseshell plate and rosewood board ) for 24years now!!
Granted it played much better after a refret and renut and setting up properly but I really don't understand the snobbery which people have against the Squiers.

There's another one here, not quite as cheap as the last one I posted (which apparently went for £120 - bargain or what?) but for a Pistols trib it'd do the job;

If you really don't want a P, it makes sense to get the cheapest playable P copy you can find. If you really want it active, chuck in an Artec 2-band eq.
Good plan!

For punk...you honestly want a P. Passive doesn't mean it 'sounds crap', a crisp active tone would certainly sound crap (for punk)

Check out the bass solo (played on a P) in this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bimNMiz250

Seriously...check it out!! Awesome.
