I've just got a new band with decent transport so I got hold of a old trace elliot 4 x 10 and the small 1 x15 cheap with the idea of upgrading the speakers as they are a bit tired and not powerfull enough. i was thinking of upgrading them to the celestion neodymium orange series as i like a well defined bass sound and there description sound right to me. stevie Posted March 13, 2009 Share Posted March 13, 2009 The new Chinese-built drivers from Fane look quite good and are well priced. I've not tried them personally but the manufacturer is competent and the specs are OK if you choose the right ones. They're not neo though. The 15/400 watt is under £50 (http://www.bkelec.com/Pro/Drive_Units/Fane/Sov15-425.htm) and the 125W 10" is £22.50. Good if you're on a budget. Many manufacturers choose their drivers primarily based on their cost, not how well they work, and the majority of manufacturer's don't design their own cabs, but have it done for them by independent engineers, whose driver spec recommendations aren't always heeded. Most cabs can be loaded with better drivers. The problem lies in finding out exactly what the specs are on the drivers in your cabs to see if there's room for improvement. That's not information most manufacturers are willing to divulge. Also check out Eminence speakers. I don't know if they'll be good in TE boxes but they seem to be the supplier of choce to most of the bass cab world. Delberthot Posted March 14, 2009 Share Posted March 14, 2009 I had one of the compact 15" cabs and replaced the standard 200w Celestion speaker with a 300w one. I didn't really make it any louder but eliminated the slight distortion I was getting by over driving the original one. The 4x10" cabs have 32 ohm drivers if i remember correctly - in fact someone posted a link here somewhere about a company selling the original spec drivers which might help if yours are past it.
