I have a westone thunder 1a fretless and a fender mim jazz bass

Good call. You can't go wrong with those two, good solid basses both.

Thanks for the advice and what basses do you guys currently use?

L-R: bitsa P bass (modified since pic), Thunder 1-A, Shuker custom 5-string, Sire V7 5-string, bitsa 'Ray-ish fretless, Ibanez BTB 6-string. Missing from pic: Wal Pro 2-E.

(PS. just in case you didn't know... 'bitsa' is a common term that refers to a bass that has been home-built from parts, i.e. made up from 'bitsa this and bitsa that' :)  )

Can I recommend Ed Friedland books to you @Harryb0201

he does lots of YouTube also. See also @Stuart Clayton for explaining extended scale patterns

I also commend “bass guitar for dummies”, in the local library probably, as the author deconstructs the process of choosing notes for a bass line over given chords in a painless and informative manner. Lightbulb moment for me as he did it in just the right way.

He does books on every conceivable subject bass-wise and he gives really good examples. He was apparently a guitard once but chose instead the righteous path of bass

I reckon you need to screw those pickup polepieces out a bit further. ;)

In an era of great video resources I find books so yesterday and boring. Wrong media for the medium. But then I'm a ridiculous old fart.

But with books you can work at your own pace without constantly reaching for the Pause button

Harry, Teebs -- do you guys find the Thunder tends to neck-dive?

Yes It does a little you notice it when you play for a long period of time

Yes - during gigs, every time I leaned down to adjust tuner / cable / move guitarists' crap - the headstock would plummet towards the floor :/

I got quite adept at catching it before it bounced off the stage!

I also have a westone st bass which I managed to steal for £60 but I don't have an issue with this one due to weight distribution
