hooky_lowdown
@BassApprentice how did you knock off the gloss on the body? Also, what sanding (machine or hand) and what grits did you use? Looks fab btw. 😃
stewblack
1 hour ago, BassApprentice said: Thanks Stew, the colour came out of the can exactly how I wanted it which is a rare occurrence! Hopefully have it playable by the end of the weekend! It's just a perfect, gentle pastel kind of finish. Perfect for that particular size of bass and the maple board. After painting since it's a matte finish just 0000 steel wool to take down the rough/raised areas. The finish isn't perfect on the back but good enough for me! Are you still adding the big humbucker? Going to get it all back together and see how I like it, the humbucker will be laying in wait
BassApprentice
I genuinely had no idea that Squier were releasing something that looks to be EXACTLY the same colour!

BassApprentice
Well - it's done...for now. Dead chuffed! The pickup is surprisingly meaty, lacking a bit of definition on the lower end but not bad for £8. Setup is a bit ropey - the nut is giving me issues at the 1st-5th frets on E and A so will sort that. Intonation is ok, with only two points to intonate it is never going to be perfect. The finish is pretty fragile, but happy for it to get chips etc since it's red underneath it will look decent. Things left to do: Get a tort pickguard. Route and wire the humbucker but this can come at some point in the future. New bridge. For less than £100 all in (so far) it's ace fun.
soldersqueeze
Oh that's super pretty. I've come to realise the Bronco neck is just perfect for me, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Congratulations on a really beautiful build.
Si600
Noooooo, Not tort. Have you no shame? Apart from that, looks wizard. Bung a playing clip up so we can hear how good an eight quid pickup is.

It is a great wee bass, let down by tin foil tuners and a guitar pickup as standard. 48 minutes ago, Si600 said: Noooooo, Not tort. Have you no shame? Apart from that, looks wizard. BassApprentice
Here's some sound samples @Si600, apologies for the sloppiness, I blame playing zingy rounds after a long time on tapewounds 😬 Bronco Pick.mp3 Bronco Slap.mp3 Bronco Tone Off.mp3 Bronco Tone Up.mp3
BassApprentice
Meant to say, the Pick clip has tone full up and tone full down if that's not immediately obvious, 😁
TRBboy
This is looking fantastic man! I've been lusting after a pink like this too and currently planning a build from scratch with the help of a local luthier in a similar colour. I actually resprayed my Yamaha BBN5 with Montana Black during lockdown! Best spray cans I've ever used hands down! You said the finish feels a bit fragile - I sealed mine with a couple of coats of matt polyurethane after, and it's rock solid now! Might be worth looking at.

Pink is the new black 😅 looking forward to seeing what you're making though. I was so surprised how evenly and how accurate the colour of the Montana was, I just picked it up as it was close to the colour I wanted and it was cheap. I think I will need a poly coat. Noticed one hit chipped off already.
BassApprentice
So a month on, still really enjoying it - bonus is it looks good enough that it gets permission to stay in the living room! The tone is good - but I want more from it. Now the original plan was a the rail humbucker in a Ray position, still think that could be fun - but do I save the routing and put the humbucker where the current pickup is. I was planning on getting a new pickguard anyway...
Matt P
Thats a lovely job you've done there, i've looked at that paint before, might try it next time i paint a body (with the clear coats over the top probably) I have a shop locally that specialises in that type of paint for street art. I have one of those 18mm spaced bridges you were looking at, bought it in error ages ago (used i think) If you want it i'd be happy to drop it in the post to you as it's never likely to get used. It might take me a week or so to get it to the post office though. Matt
MoonBassAlpha
A chrome Tele style neck pickup cover would look nice on that, or a lipstick one?
BassApprentice
So I got fed up waiting for a Hipshot vintage to come up used, and I don't want to spend £90 on a new one. So the £10 eBay special from China arrived. Luckily the top two screw holes match the original bridge, just need to drill two more holes. Will finally be able to set the intonation properly! 😅
BassApprentice
And it's now fitted! I think the original looks better but the lack of adjustability is too annoying. All set up and intonated (kind of). It's sharp down at the first 3 frets, especially on the E so a new nut is in order I think. Also looking at a P90 rather than a classic humbucker, it would still be a humbucker but just in a vintage style cover 😅
ezbass
Yeah, Dog Ear that bad boy, it'll look ace IMO.
