4000
For me, Brian would unquestionably be up there in my personal top 5. Utterly unique and always unfailingly musical.
MacDaddy
Basschat needs a "who's the best guitarist" thread as much as the ozone layer needs another hole. 1

skankdelvar
I think we need a 'best worst guitarist' thread. I nominate Dave Davies. Or Paul Weller. Either will do.

For example: a cursory listen to any Jam live album will reveal that in his pomp Granny Weller sounded like an angry scaffolder trying to remove a clamp with a lump hammer yet this presented no impediment to his career. It was only when he embraced his feminine side and did that Wildwoody sort of stuff that people could hear just how stiff and forced his technique really was. All rock, no roll.

KevB
Each to their own but from my personal perspective he'd struggle to get in my top ten. Then again Queen wouldn't get in my top ten greatest rock bands, might not even make top 20 so my view is naturally biased.
Bill Wy,Aye,Man
I read a poll for the all time top twenty basslines, after going past the likes of Geddy, Jaco, Jack Bruce and Chris Squire, we arrived at the number one spot, John Deacon's Another One Bites The Dust, three notes with '3 On The E'. Howay!
stevie
I'd have thought that bass players would appreciate Brian May's talent, as it's based on musicality and inventiveness rather than how many notes you can play in a second. There will always be somebody who can play faster than you, but crafting the kind of solos that Brian May produced is much more worthy of respect, IMO. 4
