fretmeister
Looks like it will be £949. I might have to save up. I've been impressed with the 32 scale low B on my Mezzo so I expect this to be just as good, with the added benefit of using any strings I feel like! https://www.ibanez.com/usa/products/detail/ehb1005sms_1p_01.html They also have a 30 scale 4 string on the site. https://www.ibanez.com/usa/products/detail/ehb1000s_1p_01.html
M@23
Got my first less-than-34”-scale Bass last week. A Squier Mini Precision, it’s a 28.5” scale and is proving to be great fun. I’ve played Musicmasters and Mustangs, but never a bass less than 30”. I think it’s the cheapest bass I’ve bought new before too, but I have to say, I got a good one. It came well set up and ready to go. It sounds like a P bass, funnily enough. Roll the tone back and it grooves! I bought it to have about the house, something easy to grab and do something productive with, but it’ll definitely get gigged; when we’re allowed.

I didn’t really know what to expect, but it is certainly a proper bass! Plays great, sounds like a P and is an inspiring little thing to pick up. My 5 y/o is rather taken by it too! Earbrass
Question for the short-scale experts on here. How feasible is it to tune a 30 inch scale bass down to DGCF (without having to use strings so thick that it would require mods to the nut)? Does it make the strings just too floppy? Perfectly feasible - I had a 5 string (low b) 5 string and it was fine

They just totally float my boat - especially the black one. Used to love the Vox basses (and others) that Wyman played in the early Stones days... but that's just me 🤪

I've tuned my Squier Bronco down to BEAD. I've had to use some heavy strings to retain some sort of string tension, but that hasn't caused any issues with the nut as yet. How feasible is it to tune a 30 inch scale bass down to DGCF (without having to use strings so thick that it would require mods to the nut)? Does it make the strings just too floppy? Depends a lot on how the nut is cut in the first place. I've got a Fender which will take a 115 low string and it's never been modded, but my sandberg needed a bit of horizontal widening to get a 120 in the slot. It's not difficult to widen them yourself. The skill is is you need to cut depth and shape as well. But if you are just widening then do it in a gentle V shape - leaving the bottom of the nut alone. Can use a file, but depending on the nut material you can use a bit of old string as the file. Just gently move it back and forth and the nut will widen the perfect amount. When it reaches the bottom it will be the right shape as well. Just don't go any lower than it was. It won't stop still using it in E standard. Tension will hold the string at the bottom of the nut slot even going back to lighter strings. I haven't tried a 30 scale yet, but I have two 32 scales. One is in C standard and the other is a 5 string with a low B. They both work very well. I think you'll be fine with D tuning. As for floppiness - depends on the string brand and type. Some are fine being a tone lower and others end up floppier faster.

Dave Rowe
Hi all! Newbie (to the forum) Dave here! Short Scale PORN!!! I think I must have just died and gone to Heaven (the club in London, that is, not the place with the harps and all that....) Been playing since the Summer of Punk back in 76, I really am that OLD! Still churning out the same (tired old riffs and patterns, amazed that I still get away with it after all these years...) Luuuuurve my Squier Bronco (unfortunate name for a beast of such utter magnificence) and sounds dirty as Hell!!!!

joseb84
Hi all. Has anyone successfully set up a 4-string short scale bass with BEAD tuning? Given the lower end is usually the challenge for producing a great sound on an SS I'm reluctant to try this without advice, but there are a number of songs I play requiring the low notes and I'd rather stick to an SS and not go through an octaver. If so, which brand and tension of strings? Did you have to make any other technical adjustments? Nb- I play a standard Squire Jaguar SS. Thanks!
