Lesfunk
The EMGs were a drop in replacement? I had been concerned about the Ibanez J pickup dimensions

I saw him explaining that in a video in Youtube

I am considering those for my TMB35 5 string but I am worried about the jack input, for these come for a Jazz/Precision instalation. I mean, to be installed horizontally in a plate. Also, did they improve the sound a lot? Thanks!

Also, did they improve the sound a lot? Thanks! The P was a perfect fit, the J was 1-2mm larger than the stock J... I had to get the file out to work off a bit of plastic edit: On the photo it just looks like I have just off-set the top and the bottom pickups, but it was in fact longer on both sides. Yes, I definitely like the new sound better. It's louder, and the lows have more growl, but I am biased, I always liked that zingier EMG sound some people consider too sterile or artificial. Was the replacement necessary? No, the stock's sound was alright, really. To be completely honest, I definitely under-use the J pickup, and since it's very quiet compared to the P, I could have settled with only the P in hindsight. I am however not aware that this Geezer Butler PJ comes in a 5-string version? Edited November 18, 2021 by whave
BELA
@whavenot the Geezers but the active version. That is another thing I need to sort out. Where to put the battery.

Yeah, there's not a lot of room in there, but I think it should be possible to sort it out: I could always buy some other brand PJ pickups, but the thing is that there are not too many options for a 5 string and the think that I like about this EMG is that they do not need to be soldered. Plug and play.
Pauld
Batteries fit no problem. I've got EMG actives in my short scale, the battery sits nicely in the square bit next to the p pickup.

Very nice indeed if you're into the 'Ray vibe and reckoned to be virtually as good as the more expensive MM version by those on Talkbass who either own or have played both.

Reveal hidden contents I've got the black bridge off my Mustang bass if you're interested, if you aren't already sorted. It's just the standard bbot Fender fare, or are you going for something nicer. Plug and play. I posted this before but to your point the options for pickups meant some routing and ultimately I asked for the plate to be made around it to hide any nastyness where the screws on the pickups didn't align anymore. If you don't mind a bit of work the Aguilars do sound fantastic 2
TK4261
I'm currently waiting on my 30" Marusczcyk Jake P with Koa top to arrive here in Las Vegas from Germany. I received the finished pic of my build a week ago. Equipped with a passive Nordstrand NP4A pickup and Hipshot hardware. Really looking forward to getting my hands on it in a week hopefully. 😎 Edited November 21, 2021 by TK4261 added info
Supernaut
Does anyone gig regularly with a short scale? How does it compare to a 34"?
martthebass
3 minutes ago, Supernaut said: Does anyone gig regularly with a short scale? How does it compare to a 34"? Erm, it’s shorter. I gig all the time with a shortie, easier to get around the board, I just put a gauge up on the strings to tighten things up to more comparable to my long scales. Sound wise, I actually prefer my jmj Mustang to previous Fender Jazz/P basses I’ve gigged in the past.
EssentialTension
34 minutes ago, Supernaut said: Does anyone gig regularly with a short scale? How does it compare to a 34"? Yes I have done. No one really notices. If you want to try it tune a 34" scale bass a whole tone down to DGCF. Put a capo at fret two and you have a 30" scale EADG bass. Nice!
martthebass
Forgot to mention, I really think the JMJ Mustang is a future classic, one of the best Fenders I’ve played regardless of scale length and country of manufacture - and that includes my previously owned 1982 big logo JV 57 P bass.
Supernaut
Cheers guys. I know gig bags/cases are hard to find for short scales. I have a Hiscox hardcase and a TGI Extreme gigbag - I'm guessing neither one would work for SS?
Woodinblack
I have gigged with my mustang, my Ibanez Talman 35 which are both 30" and my 27" JR. I seriously doubt that anyone noticed any difference. I wouldn't normally do a full gig with the first and last as they are 4 strings, but I would have no hesitation doing the whole gig with the TM35.
