Shortscale for Harvey COMPLETED

Been doing a few gigs, YES FINALLY, so haven’t been very active.

That said, put a few hours in tonight. Routed the control cavity, neck pocket and pickup cavity.

Had a bit of a template issue, I now remember why I stopped buying prefab templates, resulting a not so neat pickup cavity. Luckily I had already decided the bass needed a pick-guard so it is a non issue (just annoying).

I hand drew the pick-guard rough shape to show where I am going.

It will be a dragon’s blood red body, with black pick-guard and Zebrano control cavity cover (Tele style) to match the headstock caps.

I did the Crimson guitars thing, making the pickguard matt by sandpaper. Looks great I think.

In any case, Zebrano control cavity cover and pickguard (just need to make the P pickup holes and sand the sides)... CHECK!

Think it will look pretty sweet.

So the back veneer is on and “roughly” shaped and I remodeled the bit near the neck plate. Tomorrow I have a good few hours to work on the bass, so the front veneer is drying and I should get it to a point where I can slowly start thinking finish.

Getting to where I want to be.

Front and back veneer done, hole for the truss rod adjustment made, rough shape trussrod cover, all holes for wiring drilled (bridge/pickup), side jack hole (decided I like that more) drilled.

Now for lot’s more sanding and then staining.

I generally do now grainfill when I do a Tung finish as I never do colours and I use fine grit sandpaper to “massage” oil into the grain.

Wonder what would happen if I didn’t grainfill this..... using red stain on this one....

Stain looks good.  You can't beat a proper red and it will look glorious when your final finish is on.  What stain did you use?

Just diluted it, very similar to the Crimson stuff available in UK. TLC is quickly becoming my go to resource for everything but wood.

That red stain looks brilliant!

Are you using a fast drying Tung Oil? Can I ask which brand you're using?

No, I am using pure Tung. It takes a while to cure (like a month :) .....), but to me it gives the best finish. Tung bought from my local specialist paint shop, not a big brand.

After 4 coats of Tung, I had left it for a day extra to cure and am now slowly but surely putting it together.

Also had the control cavity cover split on me along the grain whilst drilling holes for the pots. Ah well, I will have to redo it (and redo 4 coats of Tung) and it will be fine.

Some selected pics for you to look at whilst I have a little cry in the corner :)

Well, if you're going to suffer a split, it may as well be a proper one!

That red still looks good :)

It clearly wanted to go, literally exploded when I went from 6 to 10mm. The new one is already drying Tung coat 2.
