gjones Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 It may be a midi played line but at least it's trying to sound like a real bass guitar. Many of the songs I hear on the radio these days have no discernable instruments at all, just a background mush of synth pads, a midi drum pattern and an autotuned vocal. 1 Quote

I think she overplays in a couple of places (e.g. 1:42 and 2:27) to the point where she not only loses the pocket but misses the downbeat - the Andrew Gouche effect. That second fill at 2:27 could have been half as long and lost nothing in terms of impact. Also, her left hand keeps shooting up the neck after playing a lower register note only for her to pull it back to hit the next note. I'm not sure why but it's a bit distracting. But her phrasing and note choice for those fills is pretty awesome. The bass player here is a monster and doing a great job. I certainly can’t play it cleanly and with the confidence he does. And he plays keyboard too! Yeah mine (4 at the time of release, now 6) too! lol Quote
bnt Posted December 21 Posted December 21 Old thread, but I saw bits of Dua Lipa's recent Royal Albert Hall concert, and best I can tell it's a full live band with orchestra. The bass sounded "pocket" enough for me to figure out that it's still Matty Carroll: 2 Quote

Ok, nother dad here who has played old school everything. Im afraid this tune is just about everything thats wrong with music today. Bass line is standard fare nothing special but nicely played and great tone. It's the lack of melody and that drop out thing when theyve run out of ideas that gets me everytime. Its pretty poor. 1 Quote
Hellzero Posted December 21 Posted December 21 I ended up appreciating Dua Lipa thanks to this cover of herself and proving she was making music. 3 Quote

Like why would you even read this thread, it's not aimed at you or your musical tastes, so you're just doing it on purpose. Pub bore behavior. 4 Quote

It sounds like a P bass with flats, or old roundwounds on, going through an amp with the gain turned up a smidge. Frankly I was amazed that it wasn't a live bassist playing the part. It sounds very human and a bit sloppy (in a good way). The Producer who played it on a keyboard isn't even a bassist. This is a quote from the wikipedia page for the song. Ian Kirpatrick recorded the track.... 'Although the bassline of "Don't Start Now" sounds live, Ian Kirkpatrick created it with MIDI. It was influenced by similar basslines the Bee Gees and Daft Punk used in their music that he had listened to in his youth. Kirkpatrick used a Scarbee MM-Bass plug-in for the leading bass sound and played it on a keyboard before modifying it.' Edited December 22 by gjones Quote
chris_b Posted December 22 Posted December 22 My parents and grandparents looked down their noses at the likes of Cream and The Jeff Beck Group (wasn't even music!!) because they didn't sound like Henry Hall, Billy Cotton and Geraldo. And around it goes. 6 Quote
