Beginners should start with a cheap bass.

This, this, and a thousand times this.

I can't think of anything more soul destroying for a beginner than having to fight a poor instrument, on top of the inherent difficulties of the learning process.

And yes, sure, cheap does not mean bad, but when you look at those starter packages and in general guitars aimed at beginners, you're not usually getting something nice to play straight from the box and very few beginners understand about setups.

Well that can’t be right because it would imply that....

The corollary of that being " you must be a really great player to have spent that much on a bass"

Scene - a band rehearsal back in the day...

Guitarist:  (stops widdling for a brief moment)

"Anyway, a 200watt amp will be twice as loud as a 100 watt amp, won't it."

Bass player:  "Err, no, I don't think it works like that"

Guitarist:  "Yeah, of course it will, you thick or summat ?"

Bass player: "No, no, it's a logarithmic scale or something"

Guitarist:  "You bass players are so full of sh*t"

                 (carries on widdling)

The answer being: You guitarist (singular) have got your fat cloth-eared head up your *rse"

Lined fretless is cheating.

Coming from upright bass I did used to think that. However, after one gig which was so silly loud I had to use earplugs I saw the light on the matter.

I thought I was in tune (I was, with myself actually), I could FEEL I was in tune, but listening back to the recording was painful!

Yes, use your ears and don't look at the fingerboard, great - but those little lines can save everyone's night sometimes!

Playing well every time is so much cooler than looking 'cool'. 🙃

If the bass drum is mic’d up you don’t need a bass guitar.

What??? Has someone really said that? Maybe the other way round, at a push.

If the FOH crew are like the ones I’ve come across in the past, it’s not that you’re not needed, it’s more that might as well not be there. 😤

I used to own a Wal unlined fretless, and was discussing fret lines with Steve Lawson a couple of years back, and he said "why would you not want to give yourself every chance you possibly can to be pitch perfect?".

I agreed.  I sadly had to part with the Wal, and now have a lined fretless....

Gary Willis says the same. Unlined does look cool though.

I have to say that for me having a lined fretless is pointless (although my fretless is lined) as I simply cannot see the lines on the fretboard at all. I can only see the side of the neck.

The magic ingredient to Jaco's sound was the chicken grease he rubbed into his strings.

Couldn't he just use Fast Fret like the rest of us?

10 minute pointless slap bass "flexing"  video's = really great bass player

The best way to demonstrate a bass or amp is to do the above

Bass players dont wrote songs

You chose that because you are a failed guitarist

No-one plays up the dusty end
