Johnnykikakat
For the bass genius of the funk era (keeping things simple and leaving lovely gaps) Early Tower of power Early Commodores (Funky situation, Brick house, ill play the music) Where the drummer had a go, the guitarist had a go and they all swapped round for Brick house, hilarious Early AWB where Alan Gorrie and Hamish Stewart took turns on Bass Natural funk that cant be taught, Steely Dan on youtube explaining Kid Charlemagne bass by Chuck Rainey isolated and studied ….stunning with the drums.
MNY
Great recommendations thank you. I have been studying and playing along to Kid Charlemagne for a few months now. I have got the nuts and bolts notes wise, but the feel is what you really have to work at. It’s very much Jameson inspired according to Chuck himself. Being primarily a groove drummer myself I love the concept of funk, the syncopation, the note choices, the repetition (sometimes), the ghosting etc etc. Cheers.
knirirr
How about this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n7ohJsUYKk&list=OLAK5uy_mqPo-qOGmHBkMb3DiPE6k3coJzyagH9oo It's much more at the jazz end of the scale but there's some funky stuff there (the title track is pretty good).

Pretty cool, I don’t mind the jazz warblings. The rhythm section is definitely cooking! Nice one! Cheers. Barking Spiders
Always been well into Herbie Hancock's funky stuff. If this doesn't get your foot a 'tappin' well...
Leonard Smalls
Talking of jazzy funky stuff, can't go wrong with Steve Coleman and his 5 Elements (Reggie Washington on bass) Or James Carter and his sax chords with the Philly Funk section of Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Calvin Weston, getting all Harmolodic with Marc Ribot on crazy guitars

I saw The Headhunters in Leeds some years ago (minus HH) with TM Stevens on bass. He was ridiculous. One of the funkiest players I have ever come across. A total monster. MNY
@steve-bbb thanks. I love Byron Miller’s playing on tracks like Brazilian Love Affair, and some of his later tunes with Larry Kimpel, (Life and Times being a great example).
Jean-Luc Pickguard
Check out Betty Davis, she was briefly married to Miles Davis and made a few extremely funky albums in the 70s. Edited July 12, 2020 by Jean-Luc Pickguard
alibabu
You could try out some of the great bands and musicians in Paris, with Carribean or African background. Some suggestions: Sixun, with Paco Sery on drums and Michael Alibo on bass. Etienne Mbappe, especially his two first albums. Linley Marthe, played with Zawinul and a lot of other guys. An example of a Sixun song with Alibo: http://youtu.be/FOAYb2bTGSY Edited July 12, 2020 by alibabu
MNY
100% agree. Sorry don’t want to appear a smart derrière but I have been listening to Sixun, Ultramarine ,Stephane Huchard, etc etc for more than 20 years. They are incredible players, shame they are very ‘underground’. By the way if you are aware of a site where I can listen to a track called Karawak Sream by Sakesho, (written by Michel Alibo) I would be grateful. It doesn’t appear on YT. Cheers. Thanks again, the video is fabulous. Pretty sure he is playing in Karim Ziad’s band at this juncture. Mark. Haven’t found it online on any of the usual streaming services. Cheers
