Only the back and top are hardboard, about 4 mm thick. They sandwich a frame, on the early models frames were just plywood stapled together, think today it's glued poplar.

 

Core of Danos is like this.

The Reverend Rumblefish basses had a similar construction, although IIRC the central block ran the whole length of the body.

Well, I'm assuming after 2 years the op has built the bass by now, but just in case there's been a bit of procrastination, my suggestion is walnut. Just had a jazz bass made from 'gunstock' walnut and it's my new fav wood of choice.
