Doesn’t the continued existence of Tony Blair within your stellar name l-based constituency knock down your batting average a little ? That must cost your bestness quotient quite a bit. 😛

Thankfully my middle name isn't Boris... 🤣

That's put me in mind of Jack's last project in our workshop.

ChairResto.jpg.2185b2f2146ecbd1475834f27a09a3be.jpg

Prior to this he had made clocks and ukuleles.

A neighbour saw how well our garden chairs' restoration had worked and asked him to restore their knackered bench.  Jack was unable to do much other than rip down the Sapele boards into batons for the job before he got ill and I finished it for him.

We used Green Hammerite and it really enhanced the cast iron sides.  I think we used yacht varnish to finish the Sapele.  All of the bolts, washers and nuts are stainless steel.

Ooh nice! Bit of a thread derail mind, but that's a cracking transformation @SpondonBassed 👍🏼

Can I join in? 😖

Got asked by a friend if I could refurb his recently deceased Dad's old Roker Park Clock Stand seat, from Sunderland Football Clubs old ground...

It looked like this when I got it..

IMG_20200321_095155964.thumb.jpg.310971253c81417ad25339223b960ed1.jpgIMG_20200321_094656548_HDR.thumb.jpg.19184aeb8c869a19b70dac00de09646b.jpg

He gave me free reign, but I told him my plan to replace the rotten wood with new hardwood and redo the metalwork in black, and he gave me the go ahead.

Ended up like this:

He burst into tears when he saw it..

I stood in total silence thinking ...s h i t 😲

Yeh, as soon as he saw it he said there's no way that's going in the garden!

Got to say I was more than relieved 😆

Something new in the 'shop yesterday. Clamp storage.

Saw till next to display my new purchases...

I was thinking as I was sweeping up that all this storage making is just playing, not making real things, but then I thought, no, it's learning. It's making shelves and boxes, trying new things and if it ends up a bit wonky then no-one's going to see it apart from me and the "real" things will be hopefully better for it.

Pics once it's been varnished.

Making anything is good experience Si, no two things are ever the same, woods have different grains and structures, it also gets you used to the feel of the tools , in some joinery shops the first thing you are asked to do is to make something straightforward, just so they can see how you work and how you handle the tools and machinery 🙂

It's like practicing at home rather than playing a gig. The difference being that your practicing results in something useful...

I had a bit of white wood for the heels of the planes to sit in, until I realised it was too small and used the oak. When working it, it smelt of machine oil, or at least, engineering machine shops if that makes any sense. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? It was lovely to work, and smell ;)

It could have been a timber treatment that was used, when I used to fit roof trusses they would smell a bit like petrol when you cut them , because of the preservatives

Oak is notorious for making steel tools rust.

It's varnished, does that help?

I'm confused

Let me see if I've got this right:

So you bought tools so that you could make a storage thingy for the tools that you'd just bought?

Crazy German!

No....

I bought tools to use but had to use them to make the storage thingy for the tools I'd bought because there's so much other clutter on the bench that the tools took up the rest of the available working space.

Ich bin kein deutscher.
