Not sure if it’s money laundering just wishful thinking hoping someone takes a liking to it

It does have the make an offer option though. I'm sure he'll have a price in his head that he would really let it go for, listing it sky high will certainly keep the low ballers from wasting his time.

There might be someone out there who gets it for 10Gs thinking they've won and done a good deal 🤷

Yeah I found that too , he does get some nice basses and a few I would have bought but not much flexibility on the price

Perhaps, I’ve heard stories about using such deals to launder money. This is so out of the realms of reality it smack of such things.

I knew a plasterer who’d use his cash warning to buy second hand guitars (including some of mine). He’d keep them for a bit then sell them on if he didn’t like them. The principle is the same.

To launder money, you would need to receive it back, which might be the flaw here if that was the grand plan

It can be networks of people involved. One way it works is that someone with dirty money uses it to buy an asset at an inflated price giving it the veneer of legitimacy to it. The money is then transferred several times and returned to the original purchaser. Everyone takes a cut.

Another is musical instruments as antiquities being used to store capital. Guitars can easily be transferred across borders and few questions are asked about where they came from.

Happens a lot with antiques. I worked at Trading Standards for a bit and it’s fascinating stuff.

Pretty pricey but a really nice 66 P listed yesterday, haven’t seen many in this condition

Blimey that's clean! Out of my price range though, by a good margin!
What's the nut width on this Tony, I'm assuming 44mm?

A bit cheaper on their website https://www.guncottonguitars.com/basses#/1966-fender-precision-bass. Still overpriced though, considering sunburst 66 jazz basses tend to be going for 8-9k from most other price-hiking UK dealers

Not sure why you'd want to touch this for £10k when for only £1,200 more you could buy that refin that Mr Dream On picked up for £3800 at auction a week prior.

I noticed he'd also bought a couple of Gibson Les Pauls in the same auction and was trying the same trick with them.

I think it's less of a trick and more of a fun way to make a living. No doubt it's a cool game to play. I've got the knowledge, I just wish I had the funds behind me to do the same and put that knowledge to good use!

I have a ‘significant birthday’ this year which has made me start thinking about getting a bass as old as me! Would be a ‘63 Jazz if poss.

I guess I could go to No Tom (although they ignored me when I was in there a few weeks ago) or the Bass Gallery as ‘getting one off eBay’ (as if one would come up there!) is probably not a good idea!

I’ve scoured the usual places and Reggaebass suggested Andy Baxter but any other thoughts on how I might source one and not get ripped off?

I share your fears. I’m celebrating (?) my 50th and I would love a P bass from ‘73 but am scared to death of purchasing one from anyone other than someone such as Andy Baxter or a well known member on here, where the authenticity and provenance is known. 😬😬😬

I’m very wary of Denmark St as I understand the Harrisons are involved in at least two of the businesses there.

There are UK vintage specialists with good reputations including, but not limited to, ATB and Andy Baxter. Both source from the US and I’m sure if they were confident an enquiry was serious and realistic re pricing, they would probably have the contacts to source and import. There never seem to be many 63s available. a search for a genuine example in the UK could take a long time. This looks ok https://www.gbase.com/gear/fender-jazz-bass-1963-sunburst-3

There is an outside chance a wanted ad on here might produce a result.

I may well be looking to sell my black 73 P bass on here in the very near future, only thing is that it does not have the original pickups which I have been waiting to come up on Reverb or Ebay, no such luck so far

Could be tempted, but the dream vintage p I’d like would be natural with a rosewood board and black plate (I think someone was selling a ‘72 the exact same a couple of years ago @Clarky possibly)?

'73's "usually" come up sunburst/tort, I don't recall ever seeing a natural/black one at all for sale recently. I bought a '73 P bass last year from ATB Guitars. I can highly recommend them. Mike Long is good to deal with, and it seems in retrospect that I got a really good deal on mine, given the way prices are now compared with only a year ago. All original bass, non-original case. I love it to bits.

Another option, and one I would consider, is contacting a couple of dealers and putting the word out that you're looking. Richard Henry is a straight up dealer, and is on "safari" all the time. If he knows someone is looking, he might find it. He's just put up a couple of '68 Tele basses ex-Oasis.

Harrisons = trouble and strife. agreed.

Harrisons? Do tell...

I ask this as someone who, as we speak, has a bass on it's way back to Denmark Street for a refund and you've now got me worried!

Rose Morris btw.

(The '65 P is also in transit on it's way to Andy Baxter - quite the nerve wracking weekend all in!)
