ossyrocks
Hi chaps, I think this Jazz is '73, but my only reference book, "The Fender Bass An Illustrated History" is not very helpful at decoding 70's neck stamps. Does anyone know if this stamp has any meaning? Thanks, Rob

rwillett
One reading of this could be 02 = Jazz Bass - Looks about right 01 = Rosewood Fingerboard (can't see it) 43 = possibly could be 43rd week of year 3 = 1973 3 = Weds Taken from http://www.guitarhq.com/fender.html#specs Of course I could be 100% wrong and more than likely am. Coincidentally, the pots are also dated 43rd week of '73, ie 137 7343, which could easily have been fitted to a '74 bass. But things are stacking up to be a '73. Beedster
Did someone mention fretless 70's Jazz bound neck....... Very much not all original of course, but mostly early 70's in origin 👍

It will be Lawrie (despite many attempts, Jazzes tend to have short life expectancy at my place) 🙂 I've had a Warmoth fretless Precision neck on it for a few months and used it quite a lot. While the Jazz neck is a joy to play (and to look at), I just don't have the dexterity for thin necks when push comes to shove. I was tempted to put the precision neck back on but given on a Jazz I mostly use back PUP open and the front PUP rolled back, it makes more sense to stick with my two FLPJs anyway 👍

ossyrocks
Ok, New Bass Day! That last pic I posted was of this bass. I picked it up yesterday for evaluation, and I've done the deal today. I'm pretty excited about this one, it's quite special. 1973 Fender Jazz Bass in original factory black with white guard. Neck, pickup and pots all date to '73. The wiring appears untouched, as do the pickups. I've spent the last hour restringing it, and giving it a setup and intonation. It plays like a dream and sounds fabulous. It is entirely original, but missing the covers and case, hey ho. Needless to say, one went out of the door too today, and I'm quite a bit lighter in cash than I was yesterday, but I think it was worth it. Thanks, Rob 16

The board is lovely, as are the frets. I haven't done anything with it either. I think the next time I have the strings off, I'll give it some lemon oil and see what it looks like. What the photos don't really show is the lacquer checking. The headstock face is very finely checked, but not flaking. The body is checking front and back, the way 70's Fenders do sometimes, in long lines running the length of the body. Rob

Thanks, Rob Same colour scheme as my Fender AVRI 74 reissue. I expect the neck on yours is nowhere near as chunky, though. Anyhow, that's a beautiful bass.
