I thought that but it seems to be the whole bass, even the block inlays

Isnt that one of the late 70s walnut P Basses? The bodies later on went on to be the first used in the P Bass ultras / ultra IIs at the end of the 70s

I’m not sure Woodin, it looks like it has the black border around the edge like it used to be sunburst , but I could be wrong 🙂

I’ve seen the headstock like that before but never the whole thing, it must have been in some serious Smokey places

The people who brought it to appraise (wife and son of deceased bass player) both smelled of Old ash trays and stale booze too.

Bet it stinks 😆

thats nicotine that.

had an early 70’s p in my hands briefly to appraise…it smelled like 50 year old (damp/full) ash trays and off/stale beer.

🤮

I tell you one thing, I personally am glad the smoking ban came in

I was in Ireland when they introduced it first.

Hated it.

Smoked another few years after that - in fairness, the ban and constantly increasing prices (and the smell, the constant “do I stink of cigs?” And the “I can’t breathe”) got me to knock it on the head.

Not too unusual for the headstock face to darken on 70s Fenders as that part was still sprayed nitro lacquer (over the decal), that's why the maple fingerboards always look lighter.

As for the whole bass, I'd guess its spent a good few years locked in a case and the finish has had some sort of reaction. I've seen this referred to as 'gassing'
