My mate reckoned it seemed kosher.

Apparently, a guy came in and got talking about guitars and mentioned that he had a 52 precision in the car outside and did he want to have a look. We're trying to work out what it's worth... Yoiks!! If it's all or majority original it'd be serious serious money at a specialist auction with international interest.

I saw that on ebay. A scandalous lack of information on the instrument ! Obvious the knobs are changed, but no mention of it. If it's just the knobs, it could be a bargain. It could be bought online and returned under distance selling rules later if it turned out to be a lemon. Rob

Reggaebass
@ash has pointed that one out in another thread, the logo is telling me it’s not a 78 , shouldn’t it be a S8 serial

I didn't even get as far as looking at it! Clearly it's wrong. Looks like the logo on my 80's MIJ '62 Reissue Precision

Does any one who knows more than me about these matters have any idea, just to satisfy our curiosity? Obviously an original 51/52P in decent condition (with case?) is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for it. If some serious (well off) Fender collectors were to bid against each other at auction who knows where it would end? If it's all original with case then it's a very rare thing; I don't think it can be priced accurately without knowing its true condition. Its provenance would be relevant too. Maybe a come buy me auction estimate of £20k+ wouldn't be unreasonable with the expectation it would go (much) higher.

Old Man Riva
… on the subject of excellent books on Fender, this is definitely worth a look. It offers a detailed look at Fender over the first 75 years, covering most/all of their output - guitar, bass, amps, keys etc. It also comes in a very natty tweed-style cardboard wrap. Not reliced! Old Man Riva
… and if you really want to get into the detail and the nitty-gritty of Fender from the start through to 1970 then this is the place to look. The depth of knowledge and level of detail is phenomenal (not to mention the fabulous images) - and it was certainly news to me that in the mid 60s Fender toyed with a ‘slant frets’ instrument (the ‘Marauder’)! 3

kevin_lindsay
I've got it too. I'm not very impressed by it though The Golden Age book is pretty cool, so many droolsome instruments in that book. The Seafoam Green 50s P-Bass is a beauty.
