The Final Episode: ‘The Green Manalishi’

I was just looking back at when I bought the body for this project from @mojobass and can hardly believe it was just over two months ago! It seems a lot longer than that for some reason. I’d like to say a big thank you everyone who checked in making comments and suggestions, especially @AndyTravis, @walshy, @Chiliwailer, @bassfan, @KiOgon who I’ve had PM conversations with during the build. I’ve learnt a lot from these guys and thank you all so very much.

A special huge thank you to David Wilson for the refinish. We were punting around a few ideas at the start and I happened to mention the Custom Shop P bass I had seen at Peach Guitars. David was very keen to try and create something similar and I’m happy to say he’s nailed it. I can’t recommend David highly enough.

In summary, the spec on the build is:

Fender Flea ‘61 jazz bass neck (MIM) complete with tuners

Squier CV jazz bass body of unknown age (presumed alder) refinished in Aged ice Blue Metallic by David Wilson

Lindy Fralin jazz bass pick-up’s

@KiOgon stack knob control plate and solderless loom with series/parallel switching

Fender Vintage bass bridge

Vintage white BWB pick guard

Chrome Schaller S-Locks

Fender ‘big F’ neck plate

I started with these:

The paint's all falling off already. I think that you should give it to @AndyTravis.

Looks a properly nice bass that. May it give you years of plunking pleasure.

Oh, don't encourage him please 😂. It's just a good job he's a couple of hundred miles away from me or I would probably have lost it already.

I'm embarking on something similar myself, this has been a great read. Hope the bass is exactly what you wanted!

Oh good luck. Is there a thread up and running?

Despite having some very nice basses to choose from, this is pretty much what I'm playing all the time at the moment. I've removed the batteries from all my active basses bar one and mothballed them until the gig situation revives. I'm finding I can do everything I need to do on this, including recording myself, which is another first for me.

Not yet! I have ordered a neck and I'm in the process of ordering a body. It will be a Fenderish PJ, nothing too adventurous. I just want to do it for the learning experience and hopefully to have a good usable bass at the end of it. I'm spending more than a Harley Benton but want to keep costs lower than a Sire P7 or V7... I'm spending 3x the money to get a UK made pre drilled body to remove some of the potential for disaster and the neck is already finished. I don't want this first go to put me off completely!
