agroupuk
Hey all, I have been playing my acoustic bass quite a lot recently and really like the sound you get from an acoustic. It isnt a cheap one (Tanglewood TW55) but I fancy upping the quality a touch in the near future. I have done a little bit of searching but its pretty difficult to get good info on luthiers who can build acoustic bass's. So far I have found: http://64.180.97.138/kinal/bass.htm (the Kinal Kompact) and: http://www.overwaterbasses.com/expression-series.htm I am after something with good tone, a fairly 'different' design and under £2500. I dont care how loud unplugged it is as I will be amp'ing it anyway. Now I am in no rush as I have to sell the car in my pic first and its a bad, bad time to try and do this so its something I want to do midway through the year or maybe even next year. Plus I have to explain to the wife why I need such a huge amount out of the car sale for yet ANOTHER bass lol. Anyway, does anyone else know of decent luthiers who could make something nice? Any links appreciated! Cheers, Edd
Mr. Foxen
Johnny Kinkade has an awesome rep worldwide.
franzbassist
The Fylde Magician and Brook Otter are two well known UK makes, although they may be a bit too conventional looking for you? Veillette Guitars in the US are finishing a prototype ABG at the mo that could be more your thing if their acoustic guitars are anything to go by. And a few others are Furch/Stonebridge, Magnus Guitars, Laundhardt are all up there too, and how about the Warwick Alien as well? lozbass
You could have a look at a Wechter 9400: http://www.wechterguitars.com/customs/9400_bass Abe Wechter has an extraordinary pedigree and has built instruments for Hellborg among many others. The basses are beautifully constructed, fairly unusual in design, sound amazing, and look gorgeous. I picked one up recently on BC in a deal - it was originally commissioned by a friend of mine in the Fylde area, then went on to 6stringbassist here, and on to me. There should be some photographs in the 'marketplace' section here (around 6-8 weeks ago). Mine started life as a fretless but was then fretted by Martin at the Gallery (superb job - the action is far lower than most electric basses!) I think the 9400 is around $4800 with the Fishman preamp (probably about £3200 - £3500 imported to the UK). I'm having a massive clear out in the coming weeks and will let you know if the Wechter is going (if you're interested)

My Brook is very conventional, but it was the first fiver they've made and they were fantastic throughout the whole process. I'm currently taking to them about the possibility of a double neck bouzouki/fretless 5!!!
