He now runs one of the biggest pro audio / PA companies around! So what was this correct method?
Killed_by_Death
I'd rather have someone stand over me figuratively than literally, that seems painful. I've been trying. w/o fruition, to teach a young vocalist how to do this with mic. wire.
Nail Soup
In my band I’m just responsible for my own instrument leads. So I coil it with the twist method so it’s about the same size as the pocket of the gig bag. Then it does not uncoil etc. The other ‘lead’ is a wireless thing into the other pocket of the gig bag. for a gig I take coiled spares held in a coil by those elastic things in a previous post. gjones
I tie my lead in a loose knot and store it in my gigbag. I've never had a lead fail on me in 4 decades of playing, so I must be doing something right. Edited April 20, 2021 by gjones
ahpook
I've lost count of the number of people involved with making music who have told me the correct way to coil cables. I'm pretty sure that 99% of them had never asked if I do it that way or, indeed, seen me coil cables. I must look like the kind of person who can't coil cables, I guess. One told me that if I coiled up his leads he'd uncoil them and do it again!! I know how he feels. A singer friend of mine has been banned from coiling cables because he does that thing where you wrap it round your arm really quick 🤣

Japhet
I always run my fingers down them to get the twists out then put the ends together. Then go end to end again and repeat until there's 2 to 3 ft length. Then tie in a loose knot. Has worked fine for me for decades.
dclaassen
I'm left-handed, so can coil my own leads, just no one else's. Pedantic point....in sailing, this method is call "faking" (as opposed to "flaking" which is what you do with sails).
