stewblack Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 What's the best bit about a bass? What fills you with joy when you look at or pick up a favourite instrument? Or even a less favoured four string friend that might have one feature that makes you smile. My Bruce Thomas Profile makes me so happy every single time I pick it up. It feels as though the God of bass looked down upon me one day and said: This man deserves a bass which fitteth him so well verily it is as if it groweth from his body and he shall not feel its weight nor shall he suffereth from the slightest dive of the neck. It shall always be in tune never need fiddling to achieve the right action and his hands shall glide up and down its neck without even friction, thus shall it be. Oh and Bruce Thomas himself who sitteth at my right hand as a noble Prince of bass shall haveth a hand in the design and making of the bass And Stew looked at what the God of bass had created and he saw it was good. 1 1 Quote

Reggaebass Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Ebony fingerboards , and dark boards, especially when they are nicely played in . 2 Quote
Eldon Tyrell Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Great idea. I like red and black basses, satin necks that are wide and shallow, sleek and original designs, clear lines, curved bodies, basses with some punch, growl and oomph, 2 and 2 headstocks, and neck throughs 1 Quote

Lfalex v1.1 Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 (edited) Mid frequency sweep controls. Excellent for dialling in a good variety of tones. Humbuckers with coil taps. Other than the cost of the wires and switches, why would you not do it. Kudos to Musicman for the Ray 5. That's how it's done. Strap buttons that stay tight. It can be done! I have a bass that hasn't had them tightened since '96 (and it's not a Warwick with the recessed fittings!) Single coils that don't hum. Good fit and finish. I like anything that's been manufactured, finished and assembled with care and attention. Then subjected to good QC. Just to make sure. Edited September 7, 2020 by Lfalex v1.1 Quote

Woodinblack Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 The look of the top of the neck of a bass when you are playing. If there was only one decent bit of wood, that is where it needs to be! Quote
itu Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Sound. An instrument may look and feel good, but everything else comes after the sound. I may forget many things and issues while playing because I love the sound of the bass. 1 Quote

Richard R Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Just looking at my bass and thinking- that's the best impulse purchase I have ever made and the best £250 I have ever spent 😊 (Cost does not include subsequent purchases of strings, gig bag, tuner, metronome, pedal and amp.) 2 Quote

BigRedX Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 Something that is simultaneously weird and elegant at the same time. I don't think that you can put it down to individual things. It's everything that goes together to make up a musical instrument. Quote
Skybone Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 I'm a bit partial to a bit of Rickenbacker-esque-ness. 1 1 Quote
StickyDBRmf Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 I don't know what it is, but as soon as I pick up a bass I either go "Oooh" or "Ughh". When I "try" to get "used to it" it never works. Except for the Stick. With that, it's more, "I can't play this thing, my fingers are hitting the wrong strings and making ugly noises, but it's ME, this thing is GREAT." Now it feels "right" in my hands, as soon as I pick it up. (But my fingers still hit the wrong strings, and funny noises still come out...) Quote
TrevorG Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 (edited) Rolled edges do a lot for me, on any type of rosewood. But the biggie is the sound. My Ultra P sounds great in any setting. Helps that it's good to look at too! Edited September 9, 2020 by TrevorG 2 Quote
OliverBlackman Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 Vintage Fenders, fancy woods, fretless basses, those music man roasted figured maple necks.... everything I can’t afford! Quote
