@Beedster

you're welcome to try my Bravewood Sting replica. I'm in Deal.

It has a seymour duncan, stacked single coil, wired in series. Alder body

That's very kind of you PS, you do realise however that I would leave the country and you'd never see it again!

Thanks for the comments folks, been a funny old week and had to put a few things on ice so urgency for a '51 not quite as great as a few days back, but might still investigate the PUPs, and possible a '51, when the dust settles a little.

There’s an Andy Irvine demo up where he plays these but it’s not always ideal listening online. The 51Split J’s are a nice set of pick ups but an overwound stacked 51 in a 51 style p might be closer to what you’re after?

 The splits are good and make a nice sounding neck pick up (and a good Jazz set). Solo’d I’m happy with the neck in that it puts a out a convincing P sound. To be fair it’s probably not that far removed from a solo’d jazz neck in saying that I nabbed this set to have that jazz sound and P sound coming from a jazz bass and fit’s the bill!

I just A/B’d with my P bass (it’s a reverse p with flats so not like for like) but yeah the Split 51 does what you’d expect for a 51 pick up. Not very helpful but describing tone is such a subjective thing. I also have a HB 51 which has a Wilkinson pick up but I think there’s something not quite right with the wiring. The Split sounds fuller and more p like than the HB/Wilk but I’d really need to sort that out before making judgement.
