CameronJ Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Iām about to string my Dingwall Super PJ5 with some of these after hearing many good things about them. No particular reasonĀ why I chose the nickels over the steels to be honest. IāmĀ thinking Iāll check into this thread over a period of months and report in on how well theyāre retaining their fresh tone. Wish me luck! 2 Quote
Lozz196 Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Youāre in for a treat, I use these on my Jazzes to get a bit of warmth/tame too much top endĀ and have been very impressed. My main bass for home use at moment has had them on since around Feb this year and they still sound good. 1 1 Quote
CameronJ Posted September 17, 2020 Author Posted September 17, 2020 (edited) That sounds promising @Lozz196. Have you ever tried theĀ Steels by comparison? Edited September 17, 2020 by CameronJ Quote
Woodinblack Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 I will be listening. Want to know it is worth the extra! Ā Quote

Presumably thereās no difference in feel between the nickels and the steels as theyāre wrapped/coated anyway? And presumably the tonal differenceĀ is much like the difference between ordinary uncoatedĀ nickels vs steels? Quote

They donāt do steels in the 40-95 size so Iāve never used them but been using the nickels for years. The set on my Vigier are probably more than two years old and still sound freshĀ 1 Quote
Lozz196 Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 My steels are 50-105, whereas nickels are 45-100 so canāt say exactly re the feel due to higher tension,Ā but sound wise yes itās same as regular nickel/steel comparison, nickels warmer & steels edgier. Quote
gjones Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 They were on a P bass I bought from Basschat and I really liked the feel and sound of them. IĀ have now got a set on one of my Jazzes. They sound great......and are so smooooooth, Quote
CameronJ Posted September 17, 2020 Author Posted September 17, 2020 Just had a quick play and can confirm they feel delightful. Sound wise they sound like fresh nickels so I suppose time will tell! Ā Watch this space... Quote
Chienmortbb Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 I put elioxirs on my Washburn Jumbo and that put me off. I found they did noy play wellĀ much like myself) I might give them a whirl next time though. Quote
thodrik Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 I put a set of Elixirs on my Vigier last November. The B string is still really tight and crisp some ten months later. Normally I am changing strings every 6 weeks or so, so the Nickles are really saving me loads of money. Ā Quote

To be fair they were Bronze strings so they would not be that bright to start with. They were much better than the Dunlops that they replaced. Quote
CameronJ Posted September 18, 2020 Author Posted September 18, 2020 Ah, I didnāt realise Elixir did bronze strings! Quote
skidder652003 Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 slaptastically fresh still after 6 months on my jazz, remarkable really... Quote

I recently changed to TI FlatwoundsĀ on the bass they were on (purely for the tonal variety of havingĀ a bass with flats)Ā but itās nice to know theyāll still sound goodĀ when I put them back on.Ā I potentially have a long gig at the end of the year - a Panto in Wales with 8 performances a week for 2 months - thatāll be a serious test for the Elixirs as my handsĀ sweat quite a bit when playing live! Happypants Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Great, thanks,Ā Iām going to give them a twirl on the jazz. Iām guessing the panto is covid dependent so fingers crossed for you.Ā Quote

Re: the strings, Iād really recommend them, they feel nice under the fingers and sound the way good strings should. I got the Nickels so canāt comment on the steels from personal experience, but Iām sure theyāre just as good if steels are your flavour of choice. 1 Quote
CameronJ Posted March 30, 2021 Author Posted March 30, 2021 Just to add that when the factory strings die on my Xotic XJ 5er, Iāll be buying another set of Elixir nickels for it. Iām not one who delights in changing strings all the time (unless itās rounds to flats/tapes or vice-versa for a completely different tone)Ā so these are a no brainer. Quote
Crawford13 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 +1 for the longevity of nickel Elixirs. I usually change strings every 8 weeks, I am 6 months in to the Elixirs.Ā I prefer the sound of fresh NYXL's to the Elixirs, however the Elixirs win by lasting atleast double the time with consistent tone.Ā 1 Quote
Happypants Posted April 10, 2021 Posted April 10, 2021 Now on the Fender JazzĀ 4 so Iāll let you know how I get on - IĀ didnāt realise how dead my old strings sounded.Ā Initially IĀ thought IādĀ ordered the wrong lengthsĀ as the E string taper appeared to start before the nut when strung through the body. Once tuned up it seats in the nut properly but only just; the other strings are fine. To be fairĀ there was a warning on StringsDirect to measure the existing strings which I ignored! Quote
