Doctor J
He had part of his tongue removed due to cancer many years ago, but didn't stop smoking.
Geek99
My friend wouldn’t stop either - he was literally like a brother to me, much nicer than my actual brother and just what I wanted one to be. He was an only child and said the same thing. Still miss him now dead at

Chris2112
Another legend gone. He redefined the guitar in popular music - he was the first rock guitarist who could really play! Glad we got many years of great music from him.

Deedee
A proper legend. He was the byword for guitarists in my and many others formative years. 😢

Paul S
Sad news. It is hard to overstate the impact he made on guitar playing, just that one track 'Eruption' caused a paradigm shift in the possibilities. It is imo also hard to look back and appreciate it as it is impossible to 'unhear' all those who followed - Vai, Satch, Malmsteen et al, but at the time what he did was just a quantum leap different to anything else. Total gamechanger. And he did it all so effortlessly with a huge smile on his face.
Barking Spiders
Oh no, that is very sad to read. Not a fan of the Van Hagar stuff but I was one of many who was turned onto his guitar playing in the Roth years. Definitely not overstating it to say he was the most influential and significant electric guitar player since Hendrix to this day. And he and his band made rock fun, something which has largely been absent from rock ever since.
Marvin
I'm not a big fan of Van Halen, but I'm truly gutted. His impact and influence cannot be overstated. I did see this on Twitter, which makes for a smile on sad days like these 6
