BassAgent
So I had incredible GAS for a fretless Stingray bass. I was looking for one when I found this oddball at the London Bass Gallery: Sterling Ray34 body, Kent Armstrong pickup, fretless Status neck. It was affordable and I lóve the look. So it arrived today and I absolutely love this bass. Great sound, preamp sounds great... I might replace the pickup with something more vintage sounding (any ideas? Nordstrand? Aguilar?) but I'm very happy so far. It's currently strung with D'Addario strings which I don't really like so I ordered some Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkies which should arrive tomorrow. Super siked!

AndyTravis
That’s most pleasing. PHWOAR etc.
BassAgent
If anyone has any ideas for a possible replacement pickup, let me know. The Kent Armstrong sounds good but I'd like something a bit more growly, more pre-EB sounding and preferably with visible pole pieces. What to go for? Aguilar? Nordstrand? AndyTravis
Aguilar and Nordstrand will see you right...Don’t forget Seymour Duncan too... @lee650 @sshorepunk @Normski @hiram.k.hackenbacker will be better placed to answer. BassAgent
It already sounds pretty darn decent. I'm now looking at either Nordstrand or Seymour Duncan (the Alnico version) but they do seem to be pretty similar. Anyway, here's a teaser: 11

drTStingray
That's sounds great - nice playing - what is the pre amp (appears to be a 2 band but a Ray 34 would have a 3 band).

Looks like a Ray34CA body that came with a 2-band.

BassApprentice
That sounds exactly like a fretless Ray should. Very jealous! 😁
AJ567
Sweet! I've got a similar parts bass which is 5 string (i.e. a Ray35 with a status fretless neck). Using a Nordstrand BigSplitman pickup. Can't say if it's more/less vintage sounding than the one you have, but I like it a lot.
BassAgent
Thanks! In the meantime I put a Nordstrand in it:
hubrad
Just seen this.. Excellent find! So do the Status replacement necks fit the Ray3x basses nicely enough? crazily tempting as a project..

I fit a fretted Status neck to my USA SUB and it was as snug as a bug. Edited March 29, 2021 by 40hz

I am currently looking for a wood fretless neck though Not because the Status neck is bad; on the contrary, it's absolutely terrific, but I feel like I need wood If it doesn't happen I'd still like this bass a lot. You can hear it with the Nordstrand pickup here (if the time stap doesn't work, start at 22:05).
